Ni siquiera veo la publicidad como el principal problema. Si las instancias individuales de Mastodon publican anuncios para cubrir sus costes, ¿por qué no? El problema es la centralización masiva en las grandes corporaciones, como ya mencionaste. Lo mismo ocurre con los algoritmos. Una instancia de Mastodon con algoritmos simples que se describen de forma transparente, ¿por qué no?

@tux Cierto, la centralización es el mayor problema.

Pero yo diría que los anuncios nunca son neutrales. Convierten la atención en una mercancía y crean los mismos incentivos lucrativos que arruinaron la antigua web.

Incluso las instancias más pequeñas se sentirían presionadas a «optimizar» a las personas en lugar de servir a las comunidades. Esa es la lógica del capitalismo: crecimiento > personas.

El Fediverse nos da la oportunidad de romper ese ciclo. Apoyo comunitario, donaciones, cooperativas. Modelos que no dependen de explotar la atención. Una lógica diferente para una web diferente.

En cuanto empiezas con los anuncios, apoyas a los anunciantes que intentan por todos los medios manipularlos artificialmente para satisfacer necesidades que de otro modo nunca tendrían.

Además, empiezas a tener un gran interés en engañar a la gente para que pase el mayor tiempo posible en la plataforma, viendo anuncios y generando ingresos para ti.

El mismo problema por el que todo el rastreo y la manipulación ocurren en Meta, etc.

Lo corrompe todo.

@tux @Larvitz Porque los anuncios son malos. En el mejor de los casos, siempre son distracción, generalmente manipulación, y en el peor, opresión. Si alguna instancia empieza a mostrar anuncios, la bloquearé al instante.
Vivo una vida lo más libre de anuncios posible. Ayer, mientras almorzaba en la terraza de un pub por lo demás encantador, la música en los altavoces se interrumpió con anuncios. No recuerdo qué anunciaban, ya que he practicado el arte de la distracción consciente y el no recordar solo para este suceso, pero arruinaron el agradable ambiente que estábamos disfrutando. Fue el primer anuncio que escuché o vi en mucho tiempo, y fue una imposición para mi tiempo y mi mente.
Cada vez es más difícil y caro evitar la publicidad. ¡Incluso hay anuncios en el sobre de renovación del estado para la matrícula de mi coche!

Cuando un momento agradable se ve interrumpido por una canción, eso es un cerco a los espacios comunes del ambiente. Estoy a favor de servicios financiados por los miembros, no de vigilancia. Hasta entonces: bloquea, paga donde sea posible y practica la «desatención consciente». El tiempo sin publicidad no es un lujo; es higiene.

@Larvitz @tux @RowanH Recuerdo vagamente haber leído sobre una jurisdicción en Brasil que prohibió las vallas publicitarias, así que es posible debatir sobre qué tipos de publicidad consideramos tolerables y establecer una regulación estricta que limite los tipos que no queremos, según cómo nos haga sentir. No tenemos por qué vivir en un mundo donde las empresas pueden gastarse el dinero para pegar propaganda en cualquier superficie disponible, tanto online como en exteriores.

- Bulletin board
- Email as a service, not a platform
