This mini ITX NAS board with up to Intel Core 3 N355 has four 2.5 GbE LAN ports, 6 SATA connectors, and two M.2 2280 slots

Intel’s new Twin Lake processors are basically Alder Lake-N chips with support for slightly higher CPU and GPU frequencies. So it’s unsurprising that PC makers who were already offering systems with Intel Alder Lake-N chips are now offering Twin Lake versions of those same systems.

We’ve seen a number of Alder Lake-N mini PCs updated with Twin lake chips. Now Topton has updated a mini ITX […]

This unusual looking Meteor Lake Mini PC with Thunderbolt 4 sells for $369 and up

The Topton F12 is a small desktop computer with support for up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H Meteor Lake processor, up to 96GB of DDR5-5600 memory, and up to 8TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage.

It’s also an unusually-designed little computer that’s designed to stand vertically so it looks more like a game console (or a router, really) than a PC. One advantage to this design is that a side panel is held in place magnetically, making it incredibly easy to perform memory or storage upgrades. The Topton F12 is available from AliExpress with prices starting at $369 for a barebones model with a Core Ultra 5 135H processor or $419 for one with a Core Ultra 7 155H chip.

You can also pay a little more for a system that comes with memory and storage: Topton offers configuration options ranging from 16GB/512GB to 64GB/4TB.

The company is is positioning the F12 as some sort of a gaming PC thanks to its Intel Arc integrated graphics with support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing and Intel XeSS upscaling. But you’d get much better gaming performance from a system with discrete graphics or a faster integrated GPU like the ones that are included in Intel’s newer Lunar Lake chips or AMD’s Phoenix, Hawk Point, or Strix Point chips.

That said, as Ian discovered when testing the Asus NUC 14 Pro recently, while the Core Ultra 7 155H processor may not be the best option for a gaming PC, it offers pretty decent all-around performance. And since the Topton F12 has a Thunderbolt 4 port you could theoretically plug in an external graphics dock if you need a higher-performance GPU for gaming or graphics work.

The computer’s ports include:

  • 1 x Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps)
  • 3 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (10 Gbps)
  • 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A (480 Mbps)
  • 1 x HDMI 2.1
  • 1 x DisplayPort 2.1
  • 2 x 2.5 GbE LAN (Intel i226-V)
  • 1 x 3.5mm mic input
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio output
  • 1 x DC power input

The computer should support up to three displays if you use the Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, and HDMI ports at the same time. There’s also support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 wireless connectivity.

If you remove the side panel you can access two SODIMM slots for memory and two M.2 2280 slots for storage. It’s not quite a toolless design: the SSDs are held in place by a screw, so you’ll need a screwdriver to release or secure an M.2 2280 card. But opening the case should be pretty easy.

There’s also RGB lighting along the sides of the PC, because… gaming I guess.

This Alder Lake-N mini PC has two 10 GbE and two 2.5 GbE LAN ports

The Topton X4H-XL is a compact computer with support for up to an Intel Core i3-N305 Alder Lake-N processor, up to 32GB of RAM, and up to three storage devices.

But what really sets it apart from most mini PCs is that this system is made for networking. It has two 10 GbE SFP+ optical ports and two 2.5 GbE Ethernet ports, allowing you to use the system as a high-speed networking device for use as a firewall, file server, or for other applications. The Topton X4H-XL is available now from AliExpress for $204 and up.

The starting price is for a barebones model with an Intel N100 quad-core processor and no memory or storage, but you can also pay more for an Intel Core i3-N305 octa-core processor and up to 32GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD.

The computer measures 178.3 x 126.5 x 55mm (7″ x 5″ x 2.2″) and features an aluminum alloy body with fins on the top to aid with passive heat dissipation, but there’s also support for an optional internal fan.

Inside the case there’s a single SODIMM slot with support for single-channel DDR5-4800 memory, an M.2 2280 slots for PCIe 3.0 SSDs, a SATA slot for a 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD, and an M.2 2230 E-Key slot that can be used for a wireless card, but which can also be used with an adapter board to add another SSD. There’s also a microSD card reader for removable storage.

Ports include:

  • 2 x 10 GbE SFP+ optical LAN (Intel 82599ES)
  • 2 x 2.5 GbE Ethernet (Intel i226-V)
  • 2 x HDMI 2.0
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
  • 4 x USB 2.0 Type-A

Thinking about whether it's going to be too much of a resource footprint to VM each service on the Tipton N100/16gb main box.
It's presently mostly only running OPNsense for our router.

I'm thinking I'll turn it into foundational services entirely so maybe Grafana or some monitoring, keycloak or something for identity, maybe a nix cache.

Normally I'd VM each one but that feels kinda heavy? I don't super want to have to learn LXC, and I've heard it's not that much lighter? Maybe colocate services on fewer VMs?

CPU being compressible means I can overcommit but I assume with VMs I'll run out of RAM pretty quick. And these boxes are iffy with 32gb, sometimes no issues, others instantly unstable.

Updated the Intel microcode on the N100 proxmox/opnsense box, let's see if that makes any difference to stability.

I'm getting closer to running memtest86+ but it does seem like that'll take the box out of commission for quite a while. People reporting runs of hours and hours - it's only 16GiB Michael, what could it cost?

@sendai Topton N100 box just locked up again with the fan running.

That means the hardware watchdog must either not be configured properly or not working in this failure mode.

There were no backups scheduled at this time but I wouldn't rule out the power supply yet.

Next steps is try Memtest and then a better power supply.

Do you have any suggestions on how long to run memtest for?
Also I was going to boot the memtest ISO to do the test, as opposed to running it on the host o/s (debian)

Alright, I'm impatient as (stupid #AliExpress shipping times) but I'm keen to have a play around with what will hopefully be the blueprint for a higher performance, lower power #HomeLab.

I'm going to try out running with the #TopTon #AMD #Ryzen 7840HS board. It looks pretty decent!

- Admirable CPU performance
- A form factor that *should* work with a 1U case (the SODIMMs don't block the case airflow!)
- The #Radeon 780M looks like a pretty decent option for passthrough (if it works!)
- A PCIe 4 x16 slot.

If this first unit runs well enough, I'd be keen to pick up a few more with varied configurations based on what I connect to the x16 slot:

- Compute Nodes (with a Radeon W7500 card).
- Storage Nodes (with a Asus Hyper M2 card).

I don't regret the #Dell R730 I bought last year, it's been a great unit. But when compared to even low power laptop CPUs (like the 7840HS) the #Xeon 2667 v4 just can't keep up. I'll keep it in service right now, but if I add a few more of these 7840HS (hopefully) powerhouses to the rack, it will be surplus to requirements.

2024-05-01

So, final update on #IntelArc A380 in #Kubevirt/#Kubernetes.

To put it lightly, the whole thing was a bust. Likely at least partially due to my motherboard (whatever comes with a Dell R730) not supporting resizable bar. To add to that, while Linux will try its best to resize the PCIe BAR even if the BIOS feature isn't enabled, it seems the architecture of the Intel Arc cards blocks this (something to do with the card having a built-in PCIe switch that has its own resizable bar which blocks the actual GPU's bar from being resized... or something?

Everything I've seen online seems to be point to resizable bar being almost a hard requirement for the Arc cards to do any good. So it's perhaps due to not being able to do that that the performance of the card has been absolutely terrible.

#DavinciResolve Studio would barely even run in a Linux VM (which may be as much to do with the vendor than the GPU itself). On Windows the performance was average at best, and the GPU wasn't able to handle rendering to any of the intermediate codecs (like DNxHR or Cineform) without Davinci crashing due to running out of VRAM.

I have parts coming somewhat soon to build a nice tidy 1U server based around the #TopTon #7840HS board, which looks exciting. I'm tempted to pop the GPU in there, but at the same time I'm pretty sure the #780M iGPU actually has better performance than the A380, so I'm probably just going to utilise the iGPU for that.

So might be sending the A380 onto its next (and hopefully Resizable Bar capable) home shortly.
