I love the headline, but the opinion from Bruce Arthur has a very serious part 📸.

But Trump’s sheer backwards overreach offers an opening. Tariffs against the world — with the exception of Russia, North Korea, Cuba and Belarus — give other nations added incentive to build trade networks with non-American markets, Canada hopefully included. The popular resistance to the effects of this black hole of gawping idiocy should also slow Trump: as Milligan notes, one byproduct of tariffs on Southeastern Asian countries will be higher prices for clothing and shoes, which will especially impact lower-income Americans. If Trump stays the course, a blinkered American public might actually realize what’s happening.

Dozens of authors nationwide chose to withdraw from the Giller Prize because they have determined that lending their work to an organization sponsored by the Canadian entities financing Israel’s occupation and slaughter of Palestinians, comes at too great a moral cost. In addition to Scotiabank’s significant stake in weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems, Indigo (through the HESEG Foundation) has contributed over $40 million to enable lone soldiers to join the IDF in the past five years, and the Azrieli Foundation has past and present investments in illegal settlements, and donated millions to organizations promoting the suppression of voices critical of Israel. Daily, the world witnesses the Israeli government bury Palestinians in mass graves, set fire to hospitals, schools, and universities, and stifle artistic and creative life across Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, all while escalating tensions in the region with attacks on Iran, Yemen, and Iraq. These demands are based on our collective refusal to participate in anti-Palestinian racism and the artwashing of genocide, not motivated by whatever personal conversations the organizers of the Prize are having behind closed doors.

If the Giller Foundation had intended to divest from Scotiabank, they could have done so at any time in the 8 months between the disruption of the 2023 gala and their July 11 statement. Instead, they pressured the police to criminalize protestors, told authors participating in Giller events that they would censor conversations about Gaza, and doubled down on their commitment to Scotiabank. If the Giller Foundation does sever its ties with Scotiabank, it will be because of pressure from the literary community, just as Scotiabank’s own partial divestment from Elbit would not have happened without pressure from artists, cultural workers, and the broader public.

We continue to call on the Giller Foundation to cut ties with sponsors like Scotiabank, Indigo, and the Azrieli Foundation whose investments actively enable the occupation and genocide in Palestine. None of these are moral institutions, and we've seen what happens when we allow them to make decisions on their own timeline: nothing.
