Comic by Sophie Labelle

#TransRightsAreHumanRights #TransHistory #DrJamesBarry

Four panel comic.
First panel shows a young white person with auburn hair, dressed in the clothes of an 1800s gentleman, with the text, "Whenever you wash your hands, you owe the habit to an irish trans man, dr James Barry, who was born at the end of the 18th century and led an extraordinary life until his death in 1865."
Second panel shows two white arms under running water, with the text: "He transitioned as a teenager and after his studies, became a surgeon in the British army. He pioneered modern medicine by implementing stricter hygiene practices."
Third panel shows burning documents inside a furnace behind glass; the word "Barry" shows in a couple of the burning papers. The text reads, "He was also the first european doctor to perform a successful c-section. even though he became a famous and celebrated surgeon, his existence was scrubbed from the records when it was found that he was trans, after his death."
Fourth panel, shows a white person dressed for surgery with mask, cap and gloves, with the text: "Today, we honor his important but complex legacy as a proud and colorful trans man working for a colonial power. His life defied odds and made a lasting impact on the world."

Trans+ History Week is a really good opportunity to reflect on the work of those activists who fought for the rights trans people are currently defending and/or pushing to further (depending where in the world you are).

In the words of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy: “We have a history, transgender people, we have a culture and…we have older people who have made it through all kinds of abuses and negotiated their way to get here.”

More than ever we need to learn about our history to protect it from erasure.

"Protests like this led to Italy’s first law ever recognizing trans people's existence legally, as well as regulating regulating access to life-saving care like gender-affirming surgeries and creating a process for legal name change."

🏳️‍⚧️ For #ThrowbackThursday we are bringing #TransHistory to the forefront with NOTCHES’ own Kit Heyam’s 2022 work, “Before We Were Trans.” which explores a global, deeply layered history of gender beyond binary, Western ideas— instead spotlighting fluid, transgressive identities from Renaissance Venice to Edo Japan.

Amelio Robles Ávila was a colonel during the Mexican revolution in the early 1900s. He changed his name in the 1920s, but it wasn’t until much later that he was able to change his military records and be recognised as a “Veteran of the Revolution”. Trans people have always been part of our history, but often their stories don’t get told or their identities are erased.

April Ashley MBE first found fame as a model and actress. However, after press outed her as transgender, she never modelled in the UK again. Not only was April one of the first trans people to undergo gender confirming surgery, her 1971 divorce set a legal precedent regarding trans people’s gender recognition. This precedent stood until 2004, when the UK’s current Gender Recognition Act was introduced.
