The man suspected of shooting two Democratic state lawmakers and their spouses in Minnesota while impersonating a police officer appeared in court on Monday afternoon as he faces an array of state and federal charges. The suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, 57, wore an orange jumpsuit and was escorted by U.S. marshals for his first appearance in St. Paul federal court. He was charged with six federal counts — including stalking, murder and firearm offenses — in the fatal shooting of former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the shooting of Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in their homes north of Minneapolis early Saturday. Boelter then made a virtual appearance in state court after being charged with four state-level offenses — two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder — following his arrest on Sunday evening. The state court judge issued a bench warrant for Boelter and set bail at $5 million.
