Transport for London has published its final report on #London's Ultra Low Emissions Scheme ( #ULEZ ) on June 13, 2025. Within the report it claims that 680 vehicles were donated to #Ukraine from the 53,000 that were committed by Londoners to the scheme.

The Mayor of #London has hailed the success of the #ULEZ scrappage scheme, which removed or upgraded over 53,000 older, more polluting vehicles – 35,094 cars and 17,964 vans – cutting emissions and improving air quality. Outer London saw 88% of funding, with #Croydon and #Hillingdon leading on applications. The scheme promoted sustainable travel, with more walking and bus use reported. Over 680 vehicles were donated for humanitarian aid in #Ukraine. Emissions savings include 160 tonnes NOx, 8.5 tonnes PM2.5, and 33,400 tonnes CO2 – equal to powering 1,000 homes for a year. ULEZ compliance now exceeds 97%, up from 39% in 2017. London’s air quality is improving faster than elsewhere in England, with the most deprived communities seeing the greatest benefits. The £210m scheme remains the largest of its kind in the UK.

Two young women at my work went on a weekend shopping trip from #Suffolk to #Thurrock with their kids - one was driving a petrol VW Polo, the other a diesel SUV (Ford Kuga).
The lass in the diesel car wrong-laned a spiral roundabout coming off #M25 and ended up briefly going into Outer London and entering #ULEZ - she ended up with about £30 in charges but just paid them without whinging and blaming Sadiq Khan etc - there definitely seems to be a gender difference in how folk react to ULEZ (although its also the case folk round here don't always keep up with what is going on in London, a friend didn't realise where the boundary was as until last year he'd never even driven on the M25!)

Low emissions zones are a very quick way to bring down pollution ( NO2 ,PM2.5) and avoid cognitive decline and cancers from combustion traffic.

London Begins to Breathe Better
A study by the Greater London Authority has shown that the city’s levels of lethal pollutants have substantially decreased since the expansion of the UK capital’s ultra low emission zone (Ulez).
The London-wide zone covers nine million people across 1500 km2, the world’s largest zone of its kind.
The report shows that not only have deprived areas seen some of the biggest improvements but air quality has improved in all areas and at a faster rate than the rest of the country.
Nitrogen dioxide is down 27% since Ulez first came in in 2019. PM2.5’s (small particle emissions) are down 31% in outer London compared to what would have been without the Ulez expansion.
Speaking to the Guardian, Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said, “When I was first elected, evidence showed it would take 193 years to bring London’s air pollution within legal limits if the current efforts continued. However, due to our transformative policies we are now close to achieving it this year.”
