This photo was taken on Aiolou street, in what used to be the garment district, small business, and market area of downtown Athens, and is now increasingly geared towards the tourist industry. There’s a slice of restaurant to the left of the image, but mostly it’s of marble-clad entranceway and pale yellow wall, and paving stones. At the base of the wall is a broken piece of marble sign. It reads: ΓΙΓΝΕΣΘΑΙ (GIGNESTHAI), which means something like “to become” - it’s one of those words that can mean many different things depending on context.

As I remember life with my partner, family, work... in every relationship one has to learn to make it work together, step by step one learns and holds on to best possible moments

A black and white photograph taken near the intersection of Vassilissis Sofias and Vassileos Konstantinou avenues in central Athens, shows on the left, the early 1960s Athens Hilton building, which I have always found very ugly but is considered a mid Century gem, and on the right, on the pavement, a truck carrying a rack of scaffolding. The Hilton is covered in scaffolding too, as it is being redeveloped into some kind of luxury complex.
There’s something about scale, the big block of scaffolding and the small, looking much the same size from where I took the photo.

An abandoned village courtyard in the Cyclades next to a ruin. Rubble, a woven wickerwork panel, and wires strew the floor. A rusted metal dresser with a cracked window stands against the wall.

This is a syrma. Part cave, part tunnel, part boathouse, it was traditionally used to store fishing boats and equipment. Later, many were converted to seaside cottages, with kitchens and sleeping quarters. Many are now summer rentals. This one remains a fishing boat shed, and the owners, like most in this seaside hamlet, have no intention of giving it over to tourism.
