This week I wrapped up my short course on variable fonts for the Art Academy of Latvia students. My objective was very modest: just make some letters that move! But now I'm quite moved myself, seeing the result of their earnest, even if somewhat derivative, work.
Apropos, 7 out 11 projects were made with @fontra. And you know what? Having tried working with variable fonts in Fontra, I have no desire to get back to other font editors.

What would be the easy and accessible routine to produce a gif from a variable font on Windows?

I have been whining about custom axes in #Affinity for #VariableFonts.
Testing a font with custom axes that worked, I was surprised and looked deeper into it.
#PurpleHaze has been produced with #fontmake and .designspace. The font that worked was straight out of @glyphs.
@behdad what is fontmake doing differently to Glyphs.app?

[edit] the reason was, that the axis had no instances. As soon custom axes have instances, they don’t interpolate between them any longer.

Any variable web font experts have time to help me out? I’m trying to animate the weight axis of individual letters in a mono width variable font, but the kerning gets janky when the weight changes. I can turn off kerning, but I'd rather not.

I made a CodePen. This isn’t the font I’m using (respecting the license), but I’m having the same issue. I may be trying to do something impossible because they’re in `span`s.

#Affinity has fixed (this time for real) the #kerning in #VariableFonts.
I tested the lastes beta (2.6.0.3058) and all tested fonts work as supposed.
