The Changing Face Of Harlem, released on Savoy Records in 1976.

Founded by local entrepreneur Herman Lubinsky in Newark, New Jersey, in 1942, Savoy Records went on to become one of the USA's most important labels in jazz and R&B. The label didn't really take off until mid 1944 when it started recording musicians from the vibrant club scene in NYC, both from Harlem and 52nd Street. Savoy was one of a number of small labels in the New York area which picked up on the changes taking place in jazz at that time with other examples being Keynote, Blue Note, Beacon, Manor and National.

This two LP set compiles sides mostly recorded in 1944 with the exception of some Herbie Fields sides from May 1945. The dominant style is small group swing with only the faintest hint of the be bop to come with Charlie Parker's appearance on a couple of the Tiny Grimes tracks.''...

The transition from mainstream #swing to #bebop, and thus to what we now consider modern music, is most closely associated with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. To put it mildly, this music is difficult to access.

If we assume that there were two truly significant musical developments in the 20th century, namely the #Soviet #avant-garde in symphonic music and syncopated jazz and blues music in popular music in the USA, then Dizzy Gillespie and Parker probably represent the highest form of this type of music, similar to Shostakovich and Stravinsky in Russia.

If you give it a chance, you will find works of the highest musicality. Something that is not always the case with music.
The influence on our popular music can hardly be overestimated.

---------------------------

I am constantly working Barry Harris ideas into my practice and repertoire. I've watched a lot of jazz instructors explain his music theory and I always took away something good.

This short livestream is the best. Chris starts with such simple ideas and moves you right into bebop.

john ore, the bass player on this 1961 steve lacy recording, was thelonious monk's regular bass player at the time. the band's cover of criss cross, that 1951 monk song with the odd six-bar bridge, begins with a nice eight-bar bass solo.

really i was looking for a sonny rollins record but can't find it (or anything, really, welcome to my world), which is disappointing, but if i'm looking to make some shelf space, i should play something i don't like, right?

oh here's one: i never really liked this steve lacy record, his third studio album out of a total, according to wikipedia, of one hundred twenty-seven. well i did not know that. (i still don't like it. i mean, it's ok. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

This photo shows someone [me again] holding a vintage jazz album titled "The Straight Horn of Steve Lacy" on the Candid label. The album cover has a distinctive color-blocked design with a bright yellow section at the top and green sections at the bottom. On the right side of the cover is a photo of Steve Lacy in a dark suit holding a soprano saxophone against an orange background. There's a small circular label in the upper left indicating "GREAT EARLY CLASSICS."

The setting appears to be a well-stocked home library, with extensive bookshelves visible in the background filled with leather-bound volumes and various hardcover books. The shelves are white and well-organized, containing books of different colors including burgundy, brown, black, and other tones.

On one of the shelves behind the album, there's an interesting wooden sculptural object that appears to be curved or abstract in form. There are also some small colored lights (appearing as blue and multi-colored dots) creating an ambient atmosphere in the background. A bookshelf speaker is also visible mounted among the bookshelves.

The person holding the album [👋🏽] is [still] wearing a [friendship] bracelet on their wrist [where else?], similar to the previous photo. [ALT mostly by Claude]

This photo shows someone [me, Claude, me!] holding a vinyl record album in a cozy living room setting. The record is “Somethin’ Else” by Cannonball Adderley, released on the famous Blue Note Records label (catalog number 1595). You can see the distinctive Blue Note circular logo at the top left of the album cover. The album features notable jazz musicians including Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey.

In the background, there’s a [beautiful] woman with blonde hair wearing a black top, sitting in a comfortable living space with a green couch, coffee table, and various household items. The setting has a warm, homey atmosphere with natural lighting coming through what appears to be windows. [uh… it’s night]

This is a classic jazz album - “Somethin’ Else” is actually one of the few albums recorded under Cannonball Adderley’s name that features Miles Davis, making it quite a significant recording in jazz history.

René Urtreger Trio by René Urtreger Trio, released on Versailles in 1957.

A review of a compilation which includes all the tracks on this 1957 French LP on parsifal.be:

...René put together a new trio with Paul Rovère on bass and Al Levitt on drums, Lewis decided to cut four tracks for an Atlantic album he produced called Jazz Piano International, intended for the American market.

This, in turn, piqued the interest of the Versailles label, which asked René to record a new trio album, which he led with hard swinging imagination. There is a free-wheeling, coasting sort of feeling to his playing that is, still today, truly exhilarating. He was described by André Hodeir as “one of the European musicians who swings the best.”...

This photo shows someone holding a vintage jazz album cover titled "An Evening at Home with The Bird" featuring Charlie Parker. It's part of the "Jazz Immortal Series - Volume One" and is an "Enhanced Stereo" release on the Savoy label (catalog number MG 12132).

The album cover has a classic black and white design with a grainy, high-contrast photograph of Charlie Parker playing saxophone. The text is arranged in a stylized layout typical of 1950s-60s jazz album artwork.
The setting is a cozy record collection area with exposed brick walls and wooden shelving filled with vinyl records in the background. There's also a turntable visible, and some colorful album covers can be seen on the shelves, including Herbie Hancock's Headhunters.

This is clearly a collector's space dedicated to vinyl records, and the Charlie Parker album being displayed suggests an appreciation for bebop jazz and classic recordings from one of the most influential alto saxophonists in jazz history.

Lady Bird è un classico del bebop, un pezzo con il quale ogni jazzista si è cimentato. Ho trascritto e analizzato questo classico standard jazz.
