#OTD in 1970, the #debutLP from Black Sabbath was released on the #Vertigo label with lead singer credited as "Ossie Osbourne" in the UK #gatefold version. The album was the 6th release on this new "prog rock" focused subsidiary label of the Philips /#Phonogram corporation, and #BlackSabbath's initial labelmate's were #Colosseum, #JuicyLucy, Manfred Mann Chapter Three, and #RodStewart ( Rod just sold his music & image rights to Irving Azoff for $100M this wk) .

Black Sabbath eventually returned to the label in 2013 (a deal including distro to the US and Canada for the first time).

The album cover features a purple tinted depiction of #Mapledurham Watermill, a structure dating back to the 15th century along the River Thames in #Oxfordshire, England. Standing in front of the watermill is a figure dressed in black. The watermill is also known to many for its dramatic cameo role in the WWII themed 1976 film "The Eagle Has Landed", starring Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Robert Duvall and Larry Hagman.

A copy from this initial collectable #vinylpressing will sell currently for well over a hundred dollars.
