@thomasareed it's quite interesting rabbit hole, if I understand things correctly the reason why it does what it does, is that back in VisiCalc there was no way to look up a "bracket"

And I guess back then people read the manual so they knew it had to be sorted and it won't be exact.

I have no idea why it has not been deprecated though. Sure, backwards compatibility is important but in this case I think it would have been a net good to fix it a long time ago.

A screenshot from the VisiCalc manual which is a photo of the screen (old time screenshot), showing an example of using lookup to look up a discount. The description above says:

> An example of the use of the@LOOKUP function would be the following
invoice form. The total amount of the goods purchased is looked up in a
table and the found value is used as a discount percentage. Finally, the
dollar amount of the discount is calculated, and the total amount of the in-
voice is found. In this example, the order of calculation is by row (see Part
III, The GLOBAL Command, /GO).

On this day in 1979, VisiCalc, the world’s first spreadsheet software, transformed the PC from a fun gadget to a business essential - paving the way for Excel and more. What spreadsheet software does your team use today?

I'm intrigued by the 23-page booklet included in the #VisiCalc package: "Software Arts Product Corp" "DIF Clearinghouse Data Interchange Format".

Mine's the 1983 edition - here's a version from 1981: archive.org/details/bitsavers_

It includes #BASIC and #PASCAL programs for reading and writing the DIF file format. (The BASIC program doesn't look like #ATARI BASIC.)

Wow, the #GreaseWeazle really is an incredible piece of equipment.

I've successfully made a raw flux dump of an original #VisiCalc for #Atari800 5¼-inch floppy disk and written the image to a fresh disk. My Atari 800 boots successfully into VisiCalc from the fresh disk in my #Atari1050 floppy disk drive.

I am seriously impressed. This is proper #SoftwareArchaeology.

No skill exhibited on my part; the Greaseweazle guide includes an example of how to specify the correct parameters for the gw command line program to successfully image an Atari disk. Raw flux allows us to image the disk, copy protection and all.

I'm inclined to put the image up on Archive.org, along with quality scans of the box and manuals.

A wide shot of my kitchen table with a no-name 40-track floppy drive connected to a Greaseweazle (in the small white box at the centre of the frame) which is in turn connected to my laptop running a Debian-derived Linux distro. The original VisiCorp-branded VisiCalc disk is in the foreground at the bottom left of the frame.

I did subscribe to #ByteMagazine back then, but I don't remember that issue. Wasn't #HyperCard already a big thing by then? I remember people calling HyperCard the new killer app for the Mac, like #VisiCalc had been for the Apple II.

Fun anecdote for #Swedish speakers: I worked at #Ericsson earlier in the 80's, and we had to submit subscription requests for American magazines via the US office. When I asked for Byte, they replied that they couldn't find a mag called Change.

VisiCalc for the Apple II computer was the first spreadsheet program. It turned 8-bit microcomputers from toys into serious business tools, and it ruled the spreadsheet market from 1979 to 1983 when Lotus introduced 1-2-3.

But if there's VisiCalc, is there also OstroCalc?

@danb @billseitz
I swear, I did not intend to talk shit about spreadsheets to one of the VisiCalc guys! 🤦🏻‍♂️

In fact, I have a draft post which name drops #VisiCalc and #OregonTrail as unaddressed disruptors of the #education industry.

Ironically, I think #EdTech is a market problem space which lends itself to the strengths of the VisionPro product superversive.co/blog/visionpro

#VisiCalc and #OregonTrail are two halves of the business and gamefication of computers that broke #education and #industry.

TIL #VisiCalc was released on this day (Oct 17, 1979) positioning #Apple as THE company for microcomputers. According to Wikipedia:

> It is considered the killer application for the Apple II, turning the microcomputer from a hobby for computer enthusiasts into a serious business tool, and then prompting #IBM to introduce the IBM #PC two years later.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VisiCa

I never used VisiCalc, I'm from #Lotus 123 and forward.
