#DavidLetterman interviews #GraceHopper

Letterman: Now what interested you about going into the Navy at 37?

Hopper: Well, World War II to begin with. That's one of the hardest things to tell people in this country. There was a time when everybody in this country all did one thing together.

Letterman: Yeah and and you just wanted to get over there and fight #nazis

November 6, 2001. Oulu, Finland. Agfa ePhoto CL18. Did futile manual attempts at trying to fix the fact that this was shot at 640x480, because unfortunately the AI rescaler plugin isn't compatible with Affinity yet (and also I haven't been able to afford to continue the subscription so I guess I'm screwed as far as that goes).

I'm editing these photos right now at the same place and the same desk. Though the computer has been slightly upgraded obviously. The Logitech speakers are in the closet, I have those CD-ROM games somewhere in the drawers and I still use the Microsoft Intellimouse with Raspberry Pi, but aside of that, I guess everything else in the photo has been upgraded. Oh yeah, and I still have the CD-ROM case on the desk, though I use it for my USB hard drives.

A desktop computer setup. A CRT monitor displays the Windows 98SE start-up screen. A white Logitech multimedia keyboard, Microsoft optical mouse, and speakers sit on a cluttered desk. On the left side is an ISDN modem, a USB hub, and a case full of CD-ROMs.

A work-in-progress project next: an effort to recreate the Intel 4004 (first commercially-successful VLSI chip, and the ancestor of the x86 architecture) as an open-source Verilog project... then actually have it manufactured in silicon.

The twist: two more cores, one of which is a what-if pipelined 4004 with binary compatibility but a big performance boost(!)

A Hewlett-Packard logic state analyzer – with a [DON’T CARE] button. I love it.

Taken from a social media post by Michel Talbot.
Let me add that in this context, Operating System Programmer is akin to a hero in an ancient Greek myth.
