Flying to Hotlanta today for a conference. Decided not to bring a radio and to just tune around on websdr. If I have any free time, priorities will be learning about WSPR, WSJT-X & Olivia and desoldering SMD IC chips.

I’m receiving WSPR signals but my tx is not being spotted. Got a qrz-unknown callsign on a boat just north of Dominican Republic on the tropic of cancer yesterday!

Utah Hockey Club, 1280 AM on Northern Utah WebSDR Yellow. #KZNS Salt Lake City monitored from 80 miles north in Corrine, UT.

The KZNS 1280 web call is blacked out (because reasons? money? there's a way to pay for listening to hockey on the radio?)

Tied with the Maple Leafs with 5 minutes left in the 3d period.

KZNS is 50 kilowatts during the day, but only 670 watts at night. I hear another station underneath the hockey broadcast but the announcers win the contest.

I learned about this part of the #radiospectrum called the #waterhole around 1400 MHz that could serve as an #interstellar communications band. I was sooo excited that I took a photo of the frequency from the movie and tried to find a #websdr with coverage in the band.

Ein Leserbrief in der taz https://taz.de/!6066662/ (dort Abschnitt "Störsender") erinnerte mich an die Bedeutung des einfachsten Kommunikationsmittels nach dem #Drahttelefon, #Dosentelefon und dem Vier-Augen-Gespräch.

In Zeiten des #Internet's denkt kaum jemand über den technischen und #Material - #Aufwand nach, den das weltumspannende Netz erfordert; kaum jemand kennt die simple Technik, die einem #Rundfunk- / #Amateurfunk-Sender und dazu passenden #Empfänger zugrundeliegt. (Ich habe übrigens die erste #Prinzipschaltung eines simplen Senders im ersten #Physik - #Schulbuch gefunden, das in meinem Gymnasium verwendet wurde. Damals noch mit einer #Röhre https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elektronenr%C3%B6hre als Verstärkerelement)

Inzwischen sind in Deutschland und vielen anderen Ländern die "klassischen" Radiobereiche #Mittelwelle und #Langwelle fast völlig außer Betrieb gesetzt. Immerhin: Der Langwellensender #Droitwich in England https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Droitwich lebt noch.

Universitäre #Forschung und industrielle #Entwicklung haben zu einem Verfahren geführt, das die klassische #Rundfunktechnik mit der #Internettechnik verbindet: #WebSDR https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_Defined_Radio http://websdr.org/ .

Funktionsweise:
Irgendwo auf der Erde steht eine Radioempfangsstation mit Antenne, hochmoderner digitaler Empfangstechnik (nicht bloß einer "Röhre"), einem angeschlossenen Internetserver, der Aufträge entgegennimmt und ausführt.

Welche Aufträge?
Zum Beispiel:
1. "Stell mal die Frequenz 198 kHz (des Senders Droitwich) ein und übertrage die volle Bandbreite (AM) oder nur das obere Seitenband (USB) oder das untere (LSB)."
Oder:
2. "Zeig mir das Signal des Zeitzeichensenders #DCF77 auf der Frequenz 77,5 kHz (bei #Mainflingen bei Frankfurt/Main)."
(Die übliche englische Schreibweise "77.5" beachten!)

Jeder Sender hat aufgrund internationaler Abmachungen für seinen Anwendungszweck nur eine bestimmte Sendeleistung und Reichweite. Deshalb kann man nicht überall auf der Erde jeden beliebigen der x-tausend Sender auf diese Weise empfangen. Dafür ist die Technik inzwischen aber weltweit vertreten: http://kiwisdr.com/public/ .


Wenn man sowohl die alte Radiotechnik als auch die moderne Internettechnik kennengelernt hat, weiß man beide zu schätzen. Das heutige Anspruchsdenken, alles mitzukriegen und nichts zu verpassen, überall mitreden und in Höchstgeschwindigkeit neueste Nachrichten raushauen zu können, war damals nicht möglich. Üblicherweise wurden Briefe geschrieben; heute steigt das Briefporto, weil nur noch offizielle Dokumente und Paketsendungen körperlich transportiert werden.

Mit dem Geschwindigkeitswahn kam die Gedankenlosigkeit.

Vor 90 Jahren mußten die Menschen im begrenzten Rahmen mit lautstarken Ansprachen in Stadien oder landesweit über - damals relativ starke - Radiosender zu Untaten angestachelt werden; heute reicht ein Smartphone mit der passenden Äpp.

I have optimized a few things with my WebSDR setup (replaced noisy power supplies, added chokes and added a larger whip to the miniwhip) and now get highly better results. I received over 12k stations from 115 countries in the last 24 hours.

This afternoon I’m hanging out with WebSDR friends, exploring the radio frequency spectrum.

One of my daily go-to stations is out of Poland, Polskie Radio Jedynka broadcasting at 225 kHz. Sometimes it's talk radio, but when it's music, the music is usually _really good_ and varied.

Heute war der erste Abend Kurs N-Lizenz bei der VHS. Die sind so cool! Total liebevoll alle Infos aufbereitet, wissen auf alle Fragen eine Antwort und geben sich richtig Mühe die Funker vom #darc Ortsverband A02 in Bruchsal.
Das macht echt Spaß. Wenn ihr technikinteressiert seid und mal in eine andere Welt schauen wollt dann schaut mal, ob's bei euch in der Nähe nicht auch nen Amateurfunkverein gibt.

So und jetzt muss ich mir nen coolen #websdr suchen und rumzappen ;)

That said, I checked a #WebSDR after few minutes and heard #SAQ there. It was still faint in the Netherlands, probably because their antenna was way off for it, but I clearly heard it. 😁

The user bar on Twente #WebSDR at the 17.2 kHz mark is getting more & more white as people tune away or leave the site completely... but it did reach almost to the very top of the page! 😂 #SAQ #GrimetonRadio #VLF
