Historic Powis Castle a beautiful red brick building with ornate windows, sculptures, and well-manicured garden under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

The Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust continue to unravel the secrets of Powis Castle’s lost cascade.

Despite difficult weather conditions staff and #volunteers are now exploring features that may relate to the eighteenth-century Dutch-style water garden beneath the ‘Great Lawn’.

Excavations continue this week, and there are two open days at the weekend as part of the Festival of Archaeology. If you are in the area please come along and have a look!

This week the CPAT team started a new project at Powis Castle.

One of the most significant castles in Wales, Powis dates from the 13th century. It has been in the Herbert family since the 1500s.

Our project is looking for the remains of a Dutch-style water garden, built around 1705 and abandoned a century later.

Supported by the National Trust and Council for British Archaeology.

I should really be finishing the book about our excavations there but sometimes it’s good to have a break!
