I'm installing Windows 98 on a 32gb SSD. I had formatted the SSD to FAT32 in macOS's Disk Utility app. Windows 98 didn't like it. Loaded DOS 7 off the 98 setup CD, ran fdisk, and reformatted the drive in FAT32. Now Windows 98 install appears to be working. #retrocomputers #windows98 #win98

Microsoft ScanDisk

ScanDisk cannot read from the last cluster on drive C. This
cluster is either damaged, or your system is not configured
properly. Drive C may need to have Logical Block Addressing
(LBA) enabled to work properly, or its disk partition may be
incorrectly marked as a non-LBA partition. Data loss can
occur if your LBA setting or disk partition type for this
drive is misconfigured.
Check your computer's BIOS setup utility, or contact your
computer manufacturer, or have your computer checked by a
qualified computer hardware technician.
If you are sure your drive is configured correctly, click

In the '90s, I was inspired by the Lava music player. Its UI controls looked like red paint drops.

@wyatt

My ideal laptop is one with trackpoint and two buttons. No need for a touchpad.

Around 2002 I used an old laptop similar with the one on the picture. Even at the time, this laptop was already considered old and too bulky.

If I am not mistaken, I used Windows 98, Java J2SE and Editplus. I learned to program on Java on the machine.

I brough the laptop to various libraries where I can read SUN's books.

No post yesterday 😅 But I tidied up the place a bit. Pinned some icons and added the 'Network neighborhood' to feature blogs I follow.

The funny thing is that back in the XP days I didn't have any icons on the desktop to keep it clean and memory-efficient. It's a bit strang to see the long list of post icons wiggling there like some long Nokia-snake's tail.

I have a small test recording I made when I was trying out to see how well the VGA duplicator works with a cheap VGA to HDMI cable I have. I must admit that it works surprisingly well, all things considered.

I don't think I'll be winning any "influencer" awards, but I, somehow, will try to find a way to survive that great loss.

Curious what it looks like? Have a gander:

I've been playing Anno 1602 on it, one of my childhood favorites. Quite a tough game (for me, anyway), but it's fun. I feel like I've actually learned how to do certain things I somehow never figured out way back when.

I played and finished "Star Trek: Hidden Evil" on it. Maybe not the greatest of titles, but I had fun with it regardless. I think it's the only Korean release PC big box game I own, though the game itself is not localized.

Photo showing the front cover art of the (thin) big box Korean PC release of Star Trek: Hidden Evil, showing the game title and picture of the Enterprise sideways, suggesting the box should be held sideways (somehow).Photo of the front partial "gatefold" cover opened up, with the same game name/logo showing underneath as-well as a bit of text in Korean that reads something along the lines of calling Star Trek "Star Wars' Eternal Rival," which seems to have likely been written by someone not all too familiar with what Star Trek is really about. But what do I know.Close-up of the back of the box, showing four in-game screenshots with a few text snippets (in Korean) describing some of the game's key selling points. At the bottom edge of the back cover a list of company logos and names can be seen; Presto Studios, Paramount Pictures, ActiVision, iStar, and Sego.Photo of the bottom edge of the game box showing the system requirements; Windows 95 or 98, a Pentium 200MHz, 32MB RAM, a 4 speed CD-ROM drive, a 3D and DirectX 7 compatible graphics card, a "DirectX 7" compatible sound card, and 450MB of hard drive space.

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a listing for a Pentium 3 PC that someone had cobbled together and was selling as a ready to go Windows 98 retro box. Spinning rust and all.

I couldn't resist.

While my Thinkpad X61 is great for XP, I wanted something that could be used well for DOS.

I've been adding and replacing some parts to make it more "me," and even lucked into finding a decent 19" CRT monitor. I've been really enjoying using it so far.

#RetroComputing #RetroGaming #Windows98 #Win98

Photo of the right-hand side of my desk where my Pentium 3 Windows 98 PC stands. It's a small case that can be used in both tower and desktop configuration that is laying in the latter configuration underneath a wooden up-side-down-letter-U-shaped wooden stand, on top of which a 19 inch Samsung "SyncMaster" CRT monitor stands. To the left of the PC one can find a couple of audio related components, including a 6-input basic mixer, an XLR USB Audio interface, and a Roland SoundCanvas SC-88vl. My Sony MDR-7506 headphones can be seen slightly to the left of this audio stack. To the left and right behind the monitor a small metal box can be seen, which is an active VGA duplicator. In front of the CRT are several small Toy Story toy characters. Underneath the wooden stand and right on top of the PC case an Iomega ZIP 100 drive can be seen. In front of the PC are a black PS2 mouse that feels all kinds of cheap, and one of my mechanical keyboards (a Leopold FC750R in white and light pink). In the background towards the right a cabinet can be seen, showing a handful of big box DOS and Windows games.
