For the past year-ish, I've been working on a book series about a utopian society of Fae that suddenly has to deal with a mental health epidemic sweeping through it. My writing style is a combination of planning and pantsing: planning for big landmark plot developments, pantsing for the smaller details. I did a first draft of book 1 and just finished the rough draft of book 2, and I'm feeling _really_ good about the direction and how well it's coming together :blobCatBounce:

Writing/ reading question for y'all: the book I'm reading, uses "male" instead of "man". As in, "the male I'd seen earlier walked past me." In this instance the reference is to a god or god-adjacent being. Similarly, "female" instead of "woman".

I've seen this style a couple other times lately, feels like, and I don't like it. It feels othering and jarring. Has anyone else seen this, and what are your opinions on this style? Is this a new trend or something, and *why* is it being used?

I tend to write sprawling stories with lots of character POVs. Since that doesn't make for a short book, to say nothing of the focus, I prune the character POV to a reasonable number and put the other scenes in a side novella. I'm about to do that for the fourth time; this will be the FIRST time I have a novella size stack of side scenes that are critical to understanding the events in the main novel, but won't fit within the novel itself. (Trust me. I've been trying. They don't work.)

It's both wonderful and daunting to have so many side character scenes that HAVE to be included somehow. I love writing a complicated story with lots of intersecting parts. But it's, well, complicated, and I keep running into: I have to write this scene, it's important, but I don't WANNA, it feels BORING. Which, of course, just means I need to figure out how to make it un-boring.

After the tea, Chroma took her mother's advice and browsed the internet on her laptop for positive content. She logged in to the Forgotten Reality forum and joined its chatroom. The forum was about myths, urban legends and lost media — things that fascinated her. Despite her shyness, she got along with the other members. Especially the admin, who went by the username "SoulQuill", or "Quilly" as everyone called them.

Quilly was, to put it simply, mysterious. They never talked about their personal life and would stay silent in the chatroom, unless the topic interested them. Any question about their life or their identity would be dismissed or ignored. Chroma valued her anonymity as well, for it was a crucial part of internet safety. But she would still talk about her life as long as it didn't give away her identity.

For a reason that eluded her, Quilly had a particular liking for her. She was the one they responded to the most, sometimes ignoring other members. This worried her, for she had dealt with a similar situation before, and it didn't end well. Regardless, she appreciated their company.

What are your goals this week?

Since I couldn't make much progress on my short story, I started writing a chapter of Amniland instead. My goal this week is to complete at least four chapters.

Still couldn't finish the second draft of Mihayu because of writer's block, but I hope I'll be able to this week. Then I can resume Amniland.

I've been thinking about becoming an English-French translator for other writers, too. I'm not entirely sure yet, but I need some money, and it's something I'm pretty good at.

A crow took a small twig in its beak and flew back to the tree where its mate was waiting, having brought some materials herself for the nest. The strange-looking bowl was slowly taking shape as the two went back and forth to get more twigs, weeds, pieces of tree bark and such. Mel was standing still under the tree, observing the couple starting their new life together. She didn't dare get closer, for she feared she would cause them distress. She had strayed away from the camp to take a break, as her legs had become restless and her mind had been ruminating, preventing her from focusing on the task at hand.

After a moment, she resumed her stroll through the forest while making sure to stay away from the roads. She couldn't help but smile at the black birds all around her. This place felt so calming and peaceful, she wanted to stay here forever. But this wasn't where she belonged, was it? It wasn't safe. Nor did she deserve any of it. Yet a part of her disagreed.

When her mind came back, she found herself at the border of the forest. Before her stood a barbed-wire fence covering a big area in which a lonely cottage sat. A silhouette passed by the window inside. What a pretty place, she thought. She lay low behind a tree as she watched the house and hoped to see the silhouette again. Whoever it was, they had the chance to live by the corvine paradise. Oh, how much she wished she had that chance!

The good news! I kind of kept a story Bible for the Ascension Apocalypse. The bad news, it's scattered through random notebooks and fuck me if I know where to find anything. Going through them now and compiling as it's become necessary while writing book 2.
