Seattle has effectively ended single-family #zoning everywhere in the city. From now on, developers can build up to four units on suitable tracts, six if they’re close to transit or include affordable units. But will this really change Seattle’s #neighborhoods? Depends on what developers do. Most likely: more townhouses. cascadepbs.org/news/2025/06/se #housing

Parking minimums have been unnecessary, anti-business, anti-community, and generally unhelpful for as long as I can remember. Who wants a city of parking?

I would prefer parks, interesting, locally owned and operated businesses, different types of housing, a transit stop... All of this is way more useful than a non-permeable surface for polluting and dangerous hunks of metal.

Image that shows a street map of downtown Albuquerque, NM. A very large amount of downtown surface area is parking.

"Downtown has parking capacity for over 21,000 cars. 2,700 on-street parking, 9,100 spaces in parking lots, and another 9,700 spaces in parking structures.

Edmonton may revise zoning bylaw to reduce mid-block multi-family units
A number of Edmonton city councillors are in favour of amending the city’s contentious zoning bylaw, in one way by reducing the number of allowable units in new multi-family buildings, from eight to six.

I have said kind things about #BradLander ‘s public service several times here, especially his unusually successful work to reform a portion of the broken #zoning in #NYC to allow #housing where it is needed. I hope he is safe and remain grateful for his service to the public curbed.com/article/brad-lander

The applicant for the 24 homes on Barracks requested a deferral. We instead had a long presentation and Q and A about the last year and a half of #cville planning work and the next year plus. We had a lot to talk about! Most striking and alarming to me was that we got our first update on new #housing numbers from our new #zoning. Very low! Lower than I expected given the efforts we have taken to permit more homes near jobs and services.

In 2018, #MadisonWI adopted a #zoning code amendment to make self-use storage unit projects more space-efficient: Any new project would need to have more than one story. However, the language in the ordinance doesn't provide any further specification, e.g. what % of the building needs to be two stories. The result: This project, with it's decorative "towers," fulfills the criteria. #urbanism #LandUse

Architectural rendering of a self-use storage unit. The buildings are one story tall, but the one in the middle has a stubby "tower" on one side of the building.
