When your home *is* a temple

Temples in Cambodia are marvels of intrinsic details, but sometimes the cohabitants are, too. Like this one at Phnom Sampeau.

The monkeys at most of these temple sites around Asia are peaceful, knowing they are safe and have access to food and water. But they are also nosy and cheeky, and any seasoned traveller know to keep their belongings, food and water well contained or hidden.

Some of the temples you see in Cambodia are marvels of intrinsic details, but sometimes the cohabitants are, too. Like this one at Phnom Sampov/Phnom Sampeau near Battambang.

The monkeys at most of these temple sites around Asia are peaceful, knowing they are safe and have access to food and water. But they are also nosy and cheeky, and any seasoned traveller know to keep their belongings, food and water well contained or hidden around these rascals.

No feeding or fighting
Even if they are small, they are strong and have sharp teeth. So there is no use try picking a fight.

And never, ever feed the monkeys. It reduces their ability to hunt and gather their own food, leading to malnutrition and they become more aggressive in close contact with humans.

Small gene pools
Another challenge for these monkeys are the limited numbers of members in each family group in each temple. That is causing some problems with inbreeding due to small gene pools.

We are talking severe Habsburger jaw and bulbous lips, to use a European reference to tragedy and disaster when science is absent. I have observed this inbreeding problem to become lesser over the last few years in Cambodia, as the caretaking of these cultural heritage sites improves. Including for the animals.

But the monkeys also ad personality and scale to these photos. So I would miss having them around, if they where to disappear.

Some of the temples and pagodas in Cambodia are marvels of intrinsic details. Sometimes the cohabitants are, too. Like this one at Wat Sampov at Phnom Sampov/Phnom Sampeau near Battambang.

The monkeys at most of these temple sites are peaceful. They are adjusted to be relatively safe and have access to food and water. But they are also nosy and cheeky, and any seasoned traveller know to keep their belongings, food and water well contained or hidden around these rascals. They will try to steal anything they fancy from the humans.

And never, ever feed the monkeys. It reduces their ability to hunt and gather their own food, leads to malnutrition, and they become more aggressive and can be dangerous towards humans.

Challenging small gene pools
Another challenge for these monkeys is the small number of members in some of the temple groups. That is causing some problems with inbreeding due to limited gene pools.

We are talking severe Habsburgian jaw and bulbous lips, to use a European reference to tragedy and disaster when science is absent. I have personally observed this inbreeding problem to have become lesser over the last few years. Hopefully it means the caretaking of these cultural heritage sites improves. Including for the animals.

The monkeys also ad personality to the visits to the temple, and scale to photos taken there. I would miss having them around, if they were to disappear from the temple grounds.

Top gold itinerary in the Battambang hillside

The pagoda complex surrounding Wat Sampeou at the top of Phnom Sampov/Sampeou, "Ship Mountain" is concentrated variations of temple beauty. Before you get to the outlook points with a fantastic view to the surrounding Cambodian countryside outside Battambang.

Phnom Sampov is a cluster of hills northwest of Battambang city in the west of Cambodia. It takes about 30-40 minutes to get there from the city.

Walk up to the hill tops via the steep walkway or stairs or get a driver to drive you there. This hilltop is worth a visit either way.

But beware of the Macaque monkeys. These longtail Macaques are overly friendly because they expect to get, or steal, food from the visitors. Even if they are small animals, they are strong and can be ferocious.

There are several pagodas and temples on different sites in these hills.

Real Bat caves
Phnom Sampov is well known for the extensive caves under the hills. They each carry their own uses, cultural and religious significance and stories. Both of tradition, nature, happiness and deep tragedy.

By sunset, get down from the hills after some late afternoon shots of the warm sunset making the countryside soft and warm. Then, find a seat near the bat cave, and see thousands of bats leave for the nights hunt. The bat caves are near the entrance to the hills.

After seen the bats off, its time to go back to Battambang for the night. Enjoy food at one of the open-air restaurants near the river in the old French colonial city.

Discogs-Dienstag: Undead – 50 Gothic Masterpieces (Sampler)

Heute stelle ich eine der zahlreichen Gothic-Compilations vor, die ich im Laufe der Jahre gesammelt habe, die 3-CD-Box Undead – 50 Gothic Masterpieces aus dem Jahr 1996. Sie enthält eher zu unrecht unterbewertete Songs und Künstler. Das Cover ziert klischeehaft ein Bild des Dracula-Darstellers Bela Lugosi und wer daher erwartet, dass der Song „Bela Lugosi’s Dead“ von Bauhaus, unbestritten ein „Masterpiece“, enthalten ist, der wird enttäuscht. Der Opener ist allerdings die B-Seite dieses Klassikers, „Boys“. Die Trackliste könnt ihr bei Discogs nachlesen, ich möchte hier nur einige Highlights vorstellen.

Play Dead waren mit eine der ersten britischen Bands, die aus dem Punk in Richtung Post-Punk und Gothic-Rock gingen. Ihre ersten beiden Singles wurden 1981 veröffentlicht, 1982 waren sie das erste Mal bei John Peel zu Gast und 1983 folgte ihr Debüt-Album „The First Flower“. Insgesamt brachten sie es bis 1985 auf drei Studioalben und eine Singles-Compilation. Sie tourten mit Killing Joke, The Cult und The Sisters Of Mercy, konnten jedoch nie aus den Schatten der Genregrößen treten, obwohl es ihre Studioalben alle in die UK-Indie-Top10 schafften. Zufällig habe ich im kommenden GothDiscoInferno einen Song ihres letzten Albums „Company Of Justice“, das 1985 von Conny Plank, der unter anderen auch mit Neu!, Kraftwerk, D.A.F., Eurythmics und Ultravox gearbeitet hat, produziert wurde. Zwei Songs von Play Dead befinden sich auf „Undead“.

Die Sex Gang Children teilen das Schicksal von Play Dead. Aufgrund ihrer ganz eigenen Musik, die dem Batcave zugeordnet wird, sind sie nicht über einen Geheimtipp-Status hinausgekommen. In ihrer ersten aktiven Phase von 1982 bis 1984 wurden ein Album und diverse Singles produziert, darunter Szenehits wie „Sebastiane“ und „Dieche“. Das Album erreichte Platz 1 in den UK-Indiecharts. Danach löste sich die Band zunächst auf und besteht seit 1992 bis heute fort. Auch die Sex Gang Children sind zweimal auf der Compilation vertreten.

Was bekommt eins, wenn Carl McCoy von Fields Of The Nephilim subtrahiert wird? Rubicon. Nachdem der Fields-Sänger die Band 1991 verlassen hatte, machten die verbliebenen Musiker mit dem bis dahin unbekannten Sänger Andy Delany unter diesem Namen weiter. Musikalisch durchaus solide, allerdings fehlt ohne die charismatische Stimme von Carl McCoy das gewisse Etwas, das die Fields Of The Nephilim auszeichnet. Nach zwei Alben war 1995 dann auch schon Schluß mit dieser Ära. Die erste Rubicon-Single ist auf dieser Compilation zu hören.

Ansonsten sind auch viele bekannte Vertreter des Genres dabei, wie The Damned, The Lords Of The New Church, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Stranglers sowie die The Sisters Of Mercy-Ableger The Mission und Ghost Dance. Außerdem Iggy & The Stooges und Nico. Nicht alles ist streng genommen „Gothic“, das zeigt einerseits die Vielfalt des Genres und auch dessen Wurzeln.

Oft sind ja auf Genre-Samplern immer dieselben Bands und Lieder zu finden, das ist bei dieser Box glücklicherweise anders. Zwar wirkt der Begriff „Masterpieces“ ein wenig groß, schließlich fehlen wichtige Vertreter des Genres, auf der anderen Seite machen gerade die unbekannteren Bands den Reiz aus. Als Sammlerstück ist die Box eine schöne Sache und gleichzeitig durchaus anhörbar.

Von dieser Box gibt es zwei Wiederveröffentlichungen, eine von 1999 mit einem anderen Artwork und eine von 2001, die den reißerischen Untertitel „The Greatest Goth Collection Of All Time“ trägt. Die Trackliste ist bei allen Ausgaben identisch.
