Today in Labor History February 26, 1616: The Roman Catholic Church formally banned Galileo Galilei from teaching or defending the view that the earth orbits the sun. In 1633, they tried and convicted him of heresy, and imprisoned him for the rest of his life. Bertolt Brecht wrote the play “Galileo” in 1938, which first played in Zurich, in 1943. Brecht fled Nazi Germany in 1933.

Today in Labor History February 10, 1898: Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht was born. Brecht was a doctor, poet and playwright. He fled the Nazis only to be persecuted in the U.S. by HUAC during the Cold War. He is most well-known for his play, “The Three Penny Opera.” He also wrote “Mother Courage and Her Children” and “The Days of the Commune,” about the Paris Commune. Additionally, he wrote poetry and composed the lyrics to many of the songs performed in his plays, like “Mack the Knife” and “Alabama Song” (AKA Whiskey Bar).

Warum 1947? Obwohl der Stammtisch 1943 gegründet wurde, stammen die bekanntesten Fotos dieser Gruppe aus dem Jahr, in dem Brecht die USA verließ.
Der Anlass: Das Foto entstand vermutlich als eine Art Abschiedsfoto, da Brecht die USA im Oktober 1947 nach seiner Aussage vor dem Komitee für unamerikanische Umtriebe (HUAC) verließ.
Der Ort: Die Treffen fanden damals im Blue Ribbon Restaurant oder einem ähnlichen Lokal in New Yorkville, dem sogenannten „German Town“, statt. Die Atmosphäre: Das Foto von 1947 zeigt eine entspannte Atmosphäre mit Biergläsern, typisch für Grafs informelle Art: Er bestand auf keiner formellen Tagesordnung, sondern nur auf Gemütlichkeit und angeregten Gesprächen.
