IWM Lecture: Science Communication in the Age of AI

Prof. Dr. Mike S. Schäfer
Department of Communication and Media Research
Science Communication
University of Zurich

Abstract:
"Generative AI is rapidly changing how science is perceived and communicated, raising new opportunities and challenges for researchers, communicators, and the public. This talk offers a research-based overview from the perspective of communication science, synthesizing what we know so far about science communication in the context of AI.

Drawing on recent empirical work from social and behavioral science, it examines how generative AI is being used by individual scientists, institutions, and science journalists; how it shapes content and public engagement; and how structural divides—between users, organizations, and countries—affect its impact.

The focus is on mapping current knowledge: where findings are robust, where gaps remain, and what this means for science communication practice and research going forward."

Interactions With Language-Based AI:
Concluding Conference of the Human-Agent Interaction Network.
April 11, 2024, 1.00 – 7.30 pm.
Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM), Tübingen.
Call for Posters:
The conference aims to bring
together experts in the field of human-agent interaction from different areas in a poster session, keynote presentations, and a panel discussion. The poster session will provide insights into current research on the perception, use, and impact of language-based AI agents and similar technologies. We invite researchers from Psychology, Communication Science, and related fields working on this or a related topic to submit their work for an on-site poster presentation in Tübingen. Abstracts (300 words max,
excluding tables, figures, and references) should briefly address (1) the theoretical background, (2) the research questions, (3) the method, and (4) the results. All submissions
will be reviewed according to their theoretical foundation, relevance, appropriateness of the method, and clarity of content. Abstracts should be submitted via email to mai-conference@iwm-tuebingen.de. The

Since my métier is #mediascience and #communicationscience, the list includes one part of research & classification with and around AI.
The other part is German AI development sites and applications.

Gladly RT the list! And tell me more accounts at any time. 👋

Had an idea and am now working on a Communication Model for Algorithm-Reinforced Feedback in Digital Social Networks.

Because what else would I be doing on a Saturday morning? 😅

My hope is to illustrate (in a write-up) how much the receiver of a message is in fact communicating with an algorithm, and how the sender of a message becomes incentivized to encourage human-to-computer communication rather than human-to-human communication.

Communication Model for Algorithm-Reinforced Feedback in Digital Social Networks • Per Axbom • Work in progress

Model with a sender composing a message through an encoder (user interface) that passes through some sort of entropy (disorder/randomness) to then be decoded (also in a user interface) and delivered to a receiver who will interpret the message. The receiver provides feedback to the sender but also to an algorithm. The algorithm is then used to instruct the machine which in turn contributes to the aforementioned entropy.
