A look back on my computer history

Prebuilt Gateway + Windows 7 (2010–2012)

I got my first computer in January 2010: a pre-built 2009 Gateway DX4822 desktop running Windows 7. It opened up a whole new world to me, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator X and lesbianism.

My honeymoon with Windows 7 was short-lived as only a year later my computer contracted malware or a virus of some sort. It started giving my month after month of grief, slowly withering away as boot times got so long I could watch a whole 20 minute episode of Pokemon on TV before my desktop loaded in.

By the end of 2012, I gave up on whatever the issue was and accepted fate. I got an original iPad Mini and moved on with Apple.

MacBook Pro + OS X/macOS (2014–2024)

I got my first laptop in January 2014: an upgraded late-2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina running OS X Mavericks. It was quite a versatile computer that gave me access to programs I'd long done without. Steam was new for me and it quickly became a major reason why I'd spend countless hours with my lappy. It was nothing like my old iPad mini. With the fans whirring loud I played Cities Skylines and edited raw photos with Photoshop and Lightroom.

That is, until November 2018 when someone stole it from my apartment in the middle of the night. Thank god I had it backed up only a few days prior. Fresh out of options while away during college, I bought an upgraded 2018 15" MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave. Until recently this was my primary computer.

If circumstances were different, I would've bought an iMac desktop. Laptops, while convenient, don't give you the best bang for your buck when it comes to performance and desktops, while not portable, seemed to be the way to go.

Custom Build + Windows 11 (2024–)

When finances and frustration with my lappy aligned this past April, I decided not only was it time to jump to Windows, but I was going to do it right by building my computer from the ground up. By this time I hadn't actively used Windows since 2012 so I was in for one hell of a learning curve.

Building a PC wasn't as hard as I'd initially believed, and with the help of friends I assembled a desktop computer I'm proud to use. I don't know what the future holds, but with Windows being funky with their privacy policy and AI shenanigans, I'm not opposed to considering Linux. Perhaps Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Comparing them all

Let's compare them all side-by-side.

I have a question for my computer friends. Is it possible to manually upgrade a laptop's GPU ram? I know its possible for desktop computers thanks to @rook and @Leonianuniverse, but if there's a way to do it peacemeal with laptops, I would love to know. Please boost.

I’m looking to build my dad a new desktop this year. I built him a computer eons ago… do you all have any good recommendations on YouTube, website, or blog follows for suggested budget builds?

So far, I liked these:

In August, I decided to build a new computer. I bad built my previous computer in 2011, and it was running on fumes. My new computer build ran into a wall when my motherboard was DOA, but after obtaining a replacement, I was able to complete the new build. In this post, I discuss not only my new build, but installing the Manjaro OS and making the switch from Windows to Linux. All the parts are pictured in the content.

I would love to put together a new desktop computer (the current one I have is a bit old). The only problem is that I don't have $2,000 to spend. #ComputerBuilding

@freemo To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same. Add #introductions to the post.
