Government Approved a Disaster: Cebu Residents Demand Answers
Authorities have launched an investigation into the Monterrazas de Cebu project amid public criticism linking it to severe flooding in Cebu.
Engineer Slater Young, behind the project, has faced scrutiny from residents who say condominium construction disrupted natural protections.
Critics also pointed to local government units and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for approving the project despite potential environmental risks.
The DENR confirmed it began a “comprehensive on-site investigation” on November 7 to assess compliance with the project’s Environmental Compliance Certificate and other regulations.
The agency will examine drainage systems, slope protection, runoff management, and slope stability.
Investigators will also look for alterations to the natural landform and potential impacts on nearby timberlands.
Evidence of erosion, siltation, or blockages in local tributaries and waterways will also be checked.
Project proponents have been directed to submit Engineering, Geological, and Geohazard Assessments for validation by the joint inspection team.
The DENR said it will enforce corrective measures, including suspension or penalties, if violations are found.
According to the Monterrazas de Cebu website, the project is expected to be completed on May 30, 2030.
