Earth is the only known planet that has plate tectonics—the process that does so much to preserve life on the planet. The only one out of four rocky planets. Amazing, right?
I was reading today about how researchers plan to observe this process on distant exoplanets. Such planets where one year takes 12 hours and one hemisphere always faces the sun while the other never sees daylight.
Their quest is to answer what starts this process.

It's #Leptember! Moths are a HUGE part of many bat diets. But did you know that moths have EARS? Tympanae are structures that allow moths to hear the echolocation calls of attacking bats (so they can dodge & avoid being eaten). #Bats #Moths #CoolScience

Capturing #CO2 with electricity: A microbial enzyme inspires electrochemistry!

Scientists from our Microbial Metabolism Group & the Univ. of Radboud and Geneva isolated a microbial enzyme & branched it on an electrode to efficiently and unidirectionally convert CO2 to formate.

#Intro I’m a retired indexer and chemist who started beekeeping 5 years ago. I’m interested in #ClimateChange #Birdwatching, #Knitting, all kinds of #CoolScience, and #Antiracism. I also host #ExchangeStudents. I started on Mastodon on home.social but missed the opportunity to migrate, so I’m starting all over (including a new user name).

I've been spending too much time around games. I saw this fascinating article on a supermassive black hole that seems to have been ejected from its parent galaxy and is careening through the Universe, trailing new stars in its wake...

Day 5 of #ScienceAdvent is a bit late, because somehow the academic end of the year implies doing a year's worth of work in three weeks 😅 But it's a good one.

I recently found out that awake dog fMRI is something that we can do and there's basically an entire subfield of "dog neuroscience". I also recently discovered Gregory Berns' book, "How Dogs Love Us", and I'm looking forward to a wholesome Christmas read.

Did you know about this? Have you read the book? Do you know any cool insights from this field? Would love to discuss.

The attached pictures show the average value for each frame of a movie. Does every #movie have a unique #temporal #spectral signature? Similar to #hyperspectrometry it ought to be possible to uniquely identify movies by their signature.

I’m guessing there are lots more applications, such as #emotional connotation or even #semantics attached to certain spectral changes. #coolscience

#Colorists probably know all this already. People with #synesthesia might have a unique perspective.

See here for more examples and background: thecolorsofmotion.com/films
