🔫 100 Bullets Deluxe 4 – Crime, Chaos & Kult! 🔫

Well! I didn't win, but I did get an honorable mention in the NYC Midnight 2025 Short Story Competition. But I've taken the feedback and incorporated it into my story, and revised it, and I think it's much better than it was when I submitted it.

Fearless is the story of a mobster in the 1930s who slowly goes insane after a long night trying to pull off a complex grift.

Sitting in a cafe rethinking my #crimenoir plot - again. This would so much simpler if the protagonist was a man and there were a couple of murders.

TEXT: A CODE OF SILENCE

IMAGE: In the center of the image is the bust of a man wearing a hoodie and an intricate Japanese demon mask, set on a black background in a white, circular all-seeing eye. The man is colored in shades of cream, pink, purple, and gray. The number '04' appears toward the bottom of the circle. Over the image are concrete-textured cracks, represented in a light blue.

NO MAN'S LAND

"Needless to say, my rage and disgust levels were through the roof, and I wasn’t about to escape by that particular level of rage any time soon. Not when there was a politician with growing popularity involved. And I'm sure you know by now my abundant disdain for criminal politicians.
I’d wager there aren’t many Americans of a certain age who don't."

THROUGH THE LONG NIGHT

"Little Italian restaurants are all the rage, but in New York City, there are quite a few that also serve as mob fronts. And not just the Italian mob, either. The Russian mob, cartel connected Mexicans, and any number of other nationalities have satellite mob presence in city eateries. Why Italian? Easy. You give the locals what they want, and New Yorkers want Italian food."

TURN AROUND

"If you don’t already know why all of this was a giant, burning, screaming red flag to me, let me spell it out for you in relative terms to each of [REDACTED]’s crime scenes: It seemed [REDACTED] was the very definition of a snitch, and snitches are considered the lowest of the low on the streets.

They're considered the most honorless among the honorless."

CARELESS TALK

"Look, I was angry. I'm not going to make any excuses for it. I was angry over a lot of things, and adding to that the fact that our killer was likely some crazed, sword-wielding monster was a little too god*amn much for me. I didn’t need any more craziness in my life than I already had, but when have I ever been that lucky?
I am, as my daughter might say, a sh*t magnet."

Got a bit more done on the #crimenoir, though it's very slow. I feel like Jacob Marley dragging all those chains "these are the plots I thought would work..."

Got a decent half-chapter done in my #crimenoir yesterday and today around other weekend stuff. Feeling my way with the tone..

2024-05-26

I have now rewritten the first chapter of my #crimenoir seven times, trying various things out. None of them quite right, so instead of starting version eight today, I'm going to finish The Forest of Wool and Steel by Natsu Miyashita and watch it rain with the cats.

Physically, I'm in a Waterstones, mentally, I'm in a bar in Manhatten in 1938 watching my PI drink. She is not a happy camper.

#WritersCoffeeClub 30: What POV do you mostly write in? Why?
The #llamas, third person. When they speak, they speak for the herd first, themselves second.
For #crimenoir, first person (mostly). That's just how it is, you're looking at the investigation through their eyes.

2023-12-08

Tonight, I am trying to fix my #crimenoir block by writing the plot outline again from the perspective of the antagonist. I suspect his behaviour doesn't hang together - so her reacting to clues, etc, doesn't either.
Feels a bit like playing chess with only the white pieces on the board.

Working on the #crimenoir and trying to keep the story moving without revealing too much. Have new respect for Rex Stout, who made it look so easy. #amwriting

#WritersCoffeeClub 5: What genre is your WIP?

Well, my #llama book is fantasy once it's on paper (inside my head it's a lot more complicated).
I'm also working on a #crimenoir set in 30s New York with a female lead and no murders.
Lastly, I've a #steampunk in the planning stage, solely so I can write about steam powered mechanical giraffes.

Super focussed and organised as usual.
