Crankshaft Crossing & Teakettle Junction, Death Valley.
I'm guessing someone spun a bearing at crankshaft crossing & got stuck. Although, for Model Ts, guys would simply cut a chunk off of their leather belt to use as a temporary replacement bearing.
The name of Teakettle Junction, on the other hand, remains a mystery. Maybe some British people lost their tea kettle there?

“Dark Terrain, Evening Light” — Evening light and distant clouds above scattered desert plants growing on dark soil.
On this afternoon we decided to make a late run toward the northern end of Death Valley to photograph a particular feature. We perhaps got of to a slightly late start, but the light was still interesting as we approached. Nearby there is an area of very dark soil (which I assume may have volcanic origins) with very sparse plants. I’ve tried to photograph it before but with limited success. If you've been to Nelson, Nevada, you've seen this piano sitting out in the desert. If not, look up Nelson. It's an old mining ghost town with a gazillion old cars, buses, junk galore, and relics from the silver-mining days in Nevada. Mine shafts, an old chapel. Movies have been filmed there; it's a treasure trove for photographers. Worth the trip, not far from Vegas. If you drive down along the canyon from Nelson, there's a beautiful view of the water and Arizona on the other side.
