It's been about a month of cold weather. Finally got a nice one that coincides with a day off and I'm spending the day babysitting a couple of bikes while my friend is out of town. Woot!

We've had a long spell of well above average temperatures, and no new snow in weeks. All about to change with a brief (?) deep freeze and snow this week...starting tomorrow?
For me it's *always* about the light (and line, and texture!) but that may be even more true in winter when the colours are fewer and the lower sun gives dramatic light much of the day.

Several dry needle-less spruce branches hang down from outside the frame, angling across the upper left and some hanging straight down, with very fine short twigs. The afternoon winter sun is coming from out of sight to the left, lighting the blurred background of faded dry leaves on the ground, grey to dull red-brown and darker with many small circles of light made by the camera lens from the scattered rays of sun. This light nearly silhouettes the branches which appear nearly black but all coated with the fuzzy white of old poplar fluff which has stuck to the rough branches and twigs. The sun from behind shines through the fluff giving the branches an irregular glowing rim. In the centre the dead dried stem and fine golden leaves of a native vetch vine clings to the spruce branches, the sun turning it to fine gold.

Afternoon winter sun makes a nearly white starburst showing between two closely growing poplar trunks.To either side are scattered trees, from twig thin saplings to tall if not very thick adult trees, small spruce and the trunks of some larger ones. The ground in front is dry golden grass, an open water puddle at left and a snowy bush road and open area farther back. Beyond that a fence line with another thin line of mixed trees, beyond that a barely glimpsed snowy pasture and rolling clouds low on the horizon with blue sky above.

Today, the weather was much better for cycling than what it looked like in the weather forecast. Temperatures were low, but who cares if the wind is moderate and the sun is shining?

There’s enough heat in that sunshine today to stir a hibernating #bumblebee queen!
Hopefully it won’t…still too early yet.
That’s why bumblebee queens prefer to hibernate in north facing banks or slopes - less chance of being teased out of slumber too early by a rogue warm day.
