Hey #histodons und #earlymodons !

Ich habe gestern festgestellt, dass ich vd17.de nicht aufrufen kann (internal Server Error). Liegt‘s an mir oder habe ich eine kleine Katastrophe verpasst?

How to cut fruit correctly and beautifully in 16 ways? What is the current method of carving a roast partridge? What about this fish? A short thread for and friends.

Well, a book from 1642 answers it all. The book about these knife skills and "how to cut" fruit and meat was a bestseller authored by Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (1607-1658). His "Newes TrincirBüchlein" (VD17 23:298595Z) can be found here:

You may have seen early modern monsters, sure, but what about this cannon flipper fish thing of 1669 ?

„Relacion y pintvra verdadera, de vn prodigioso monstruo, en forma de pez, que se ha aparecido en la Villa de Rota“. Access the print here: trobes.uv.es/permalink/34CVA_U

A detail of a title page of a small pamphlet from Valencia, Spain, 1669 is shown: a fish with a human head and cannons attached to the body. Also a flag is part of the creature. The full title page of the print from 1669 is shown. The title text on top, followed by the image of the monster.

"I come now to another Engine, which we may properly call the Perpetual Motion, because no sooner is it dash’d on the ground, but it presently rises again with a jerk, and plays with as much activity as ever." - Pierre Bayle, 'Philosophical Commentary on These Words of the Gospel, Luke 14.23, “Compel Them to Come In, That My House May Be Full”'

Hadn't realised the Perpetual Motion machine idea was around in the 17th century.

Turn me around. This is a printed "Drehbild" from 1558 Germany, likely designed for and sold to Protestants as a decor paper, or simply to have a turn-around paper device handy.

If you zoom in, dear and : it's a that turns into a devilish satyr.

A thread not only for and

A look inside an early modern book shop: a thread for and experts.

Expect surprises, nowadays book buyers. I am using printed images of the chapter dedicated to bookseller's shops of the "Orbis Sensualium Pictus" (Visible World in Pictures) from John Amos . The book was firstly published in 1658 and became a widely reprinted and variated children's textbook for centuries.

Enjoy, , and @bookstodon and @histodons.

You see an interior of a book shop from the seventeenth century. Large cupboards filled with books and boxes can be seen. There is also a desk in the right front with a bookseller reading on it.

Seems like #Amo agrees w/ #Leibniz that mental causation is best understood teleologically, but disagrees w/ Leibniz by holding that mental causation can, as it were, reach out into the external world, a capacity he apparently takes as primitive.

Though he's not one of the (many) authors Amo cites (at least in the Impassivity), a good early modern source for this way of thinking about mind-world is #Arnauld.

New and busted: "this question lies beyond the scope of the present paper."
Old hotness: "This quarrel we will not make our own." [quam litem nostram non facimus] (Amo, Impassivity [1734], §4, note 2)

One of #Berkeley's most fundamental disagreements with #Locke is over Locke's claim that the "civil Use" of words is "very Distinct" from the "Philosophy Use" (Essay 3.9.3).

I defend this reading in some detail here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

The paper could've been improved if I'd had this particular bit of Locke at the front of my mind back then! 🙂
