The regular Pi is, I think, from 2008. And, there's the new one.

First impressions are that it compresses more and has a smoother sound to it than the older one. The older one sounds grittier.

This will be slightly #geeky, and probably only of interest to #electronics hobbyists and #guitar players. I happen to sit in the intersection of that particular #Venn diagram.

When I was a teenager, having only been playing guitar for a few years, I owned a guitar #effects pedal that went on to become legendary - the Boss HM-2 "Heavy Metal" #pedal. Its sound is still ubiquitous in metal.

I don't have it any more. I think I traded it for an analog chorus, which was a seriously expensive pedal back then. Although I have other #distortion effects, I've missed it a lot over the years.

Well, lots of hobbyists build their own effects. And the circuit schematics for many effects, particularly the classics, are available online. So like many others, I decided to build my own HM-2.

This image is the schematic for the #HM2. It's not the most complicated pedal, but it's a league above something like an Ibanez Tube Screamer. As far as active devices go, it's got 6 #opamps and 10 #transistors of various types, along with a bunch of diodes for multiple types and stages of clipping, and the usual jumble of capacitors and resistors. Oh, and four potentiometers.

A circuit schematic diagram for the Boss HM-2 "Heavy Metal" guitar effects pedal. It is fairly complicated as far as distortion pedals go, containing 6 operational amplifiers (opamps), 10 transistors of various types, and 4 potentiometers.

I don't know what goes into "good" alt text for a schematic. Shown here, the input signal enters at top-left and exits at the lower right side of the diagram, as is customary. In addition to the actual signal-processing path, it also includes a power supply section supporting 9V battery or AC adapter and which generates a 4.5V bias voltage in addition to buffering the power supply. There is also the traditional Boss "soft switching" which routes the signal either through the effect, or via a bypass to the output.

This is my vintage (1964/65?) FAL Treble Booster pedal.
It is 60 years old and seems to be un-modded and works beautifully - lovely sound.
My phone audio recorder does seem to have a slight hernia when the Treble Booster starts.
I am not a guitarist so, apologies for that.
This pedal has a Mullard OC44 Made in Holland germanium transistor.
Though it doesnt have a FAL label on it, it is identical to this ( ah no links, look up freestompboxes org topic 17379 p2).#effectpedal

I gave my Big Muff Pi (which is already modded/not stock anyway) a custom trans pride inspired paint job today to occupy myself. It came out better than I expected. Used acrylic markers for it.

My Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal for guitar. I have given a custom paint job. The "Big Muff Pi" is in Pink and blue trans pride colors, and the lettering and other lines are a purple. There's also the Billy Corgan "Siamese Dream" settings marked on the tone and sustain knob.

Still don't know where to put it. Replace a pedal or shoehorn it in?

The screamer has more mids, and the klone has much more boost, and each breaks up differently. Then there's the Spark boost at the end of the chain. I could replace that.

I'll need to play different guitars through it with the amp and other pedals set different ways.

I don't like choosing. This is why I have a messy room.

Klon clone has screamy treble and boost for days.
New Project 34 has some clean boost, interesting tone stack, and smooth breakup.
My board is getting crowded. Can I take the screamer out?

Then large "change" knob below in the center of the pedal. Two switches on the sides of it: faster & loop.

Two more knobs below: rise & fall.

The footswitches are "bypass" and "change".

The (wip) text between the footswitches is: favorite shape by akkusativ.
