CFS as food studies matchmaker? Yep! We’re putting together a book review and a memoir for your weekend reading pleasure…

What are the true costs of an industrial food system? How can we get a better perspective by taking both an insider and outsider look at farming?

Try pairing Rita Hansen Sterne’s review of Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat by (Philip Lymbery and Isabel Oakeshott) with poet and journalist Brian Brett’s Trauma Farm: A Rebel History of Rural Life.

While the former unpacks cheap meat, the latter takes us to small, mixed farm on Salt Spring Island (BC). But should you name an animal you are going to eat? Brett’s solution is to give them all interchangeable names, rather than assign one to each individual. His pigs go by Bacon, Eggs, and Toast.

Bonne lecture!

#Shrimp Are the Most Abused #Animals on Earth

Many people may not think about small creatures like shrimp. But shrimp make up most of the animals that are alive on factory farms at a given moment, and their potential suffering needs to be taken seriously.

#FactoryFarming is one of the least efficient ways to produce #food & is driving food insecurity in the UK. If this land was used to grow human edible food, we could feed 16.5 million more people in the UK alone. Sign here:

A chicken... I was just listening to the news on the radio in the car. Tens of thousands of chickens culled again, factory farming of poultry. Are we humans even aware that behind these tens of thousands are countless individual lives, individual souls who feel fear and pain just like we do?

Beef, pork, chicken: the world loves cheap meat. Antibiotic use in farming is now rampant, and you should care about that. “New Zealand has signalled to the world’s biggest meat and dairy producers that it’s fine to ignore methane – the largest human-made driver of warming.”

Other major meat and dairy exporters could now follow, sparking a race to the bottom for climate action.

Greenpeace responds to New Zealand’s dairy industry-backed methane rollback

Greenpeace International

Auckland, New Zealand – New Zealand’s government has confirmed it will rewrite its climate law to weaken the country’s methane emissions target – a move Greenpeace warns will violate the Paris Agreement and embolden other major meat and dairy producers and exporters, including Ireland and Uruguay, to follow suit.

Shefali Sharma, Global Agriculture Campaigner, Greenpeace Germany said: “New Zealand has signalled to the world’s biggest meat and dairy producers that it’s fine to ignore the largest human-made source of methane – and in doing so, undermine the Paris Agreement and accelerate global heating. Other major livestock exporting countries will now feel empowered to follow suit, which risks sparking a race to the bottom and threatens to derail global climate action.”
