Along with getting a NovaCustom laptop (discussed elsewhere) — in part b/c I didn't like the keyboard — I switched to traveling w/ an external keyboard. I chose the #HappyHacking Studio model which has a “pointer stick” (similar to a #TrackPoint). I like it enough I've replaced my very old #HHKB (3 models since discontinued) w/ Studio on the desk.
I do find my finger occasionally hits the stick when typing words w/ those nearby letters. I'm not sure how big the problem is, so I #AskFedi …(1/2)

Do it anyway. Break the thing, learn the lesson, and pay the price. You will know something new afterwords.
Chances are, though, you wont break anything.
Here's a tip:
these devices work at 3.3v or 5v depending on logic levels, of course, and very little amperage. This makes them fairly tolerant.
Now, if you hook up something wrong and leave it that way under power for an extended period of time, you might eventually fry something.
But if you are sensible, and hook up the thing and test it immediately - you'll know straight away it didn't work.
That's your cue to unhook the thing and find a different approach.
