(2/2) …I wanna know how often “pointer stick” (similar to #TrackPoint) is hit on my #HHKB Studio by accident while typing quickly. Catching my error rate will be hard across applications, but perhaps I could measure how often the stick moves pointer a tiny bit after a flurry of typing, which would of course be followed by a tiny but measurable stop in typing (& often backspace presses). I'm familiar w/ `xev` on #Xorg as a method to collect the data, but how hard would it be to analyze?

Along with getting a NovaCustom laptop (discussed elsewhere) — in part b/c I didn't like the keyboard — I switched to traveling w/ an external keyboard. I chose the #HappyHacking Studio model which has a “pointer stick” (similar to a #TrackPoint). I like it enough I've replaced my very old #HHKB (3 models since discontinued) w/ Studio on the desk.
I do find my finger occasionally hits the stick when typing words w/ those nearby letters. I'm not sure how big the problem is, so I #AskFedi …(1/2)

The latest generation #Trackpoint is so shallow that it's physically painful to use, making it pointless.
i have not found it painful, but badly done for sure.
Lenovo has also shown a new model without the feature, not sure how that will go down with business users.
Personally I am not in the market for a new Thinkpad, still plenty of good second hand options available.

- Maybe someone should ask #Sprintek to build a generic one themselves with like #USB / #PS2 interface to use it with, as a regular keyboard is too chonky on a #laptop?
I mean they [sell](SK8707-01) the trackpoint modules and rubber caps, and they do #OEM #Keyboards so worst-case one could do it like the #VaioP11Z or like #GPDwin have it mounted to the side.

The original #IBM #TrackPoint design patent turns 35 today! It's not the #ThinkPad "nipple", "nub", etc. you may be expecting, but a mouse for the IBM PS/2 L40 SX laptop that can function as a trackball or a ball mouse depending on what side you use it!
Not sure if i should content warn this but only ppl. old enough will understand this anyway 😂
Young ppl. will probably never get what other skills a laptop with a trackpoint could actually teach you ;)

My bluetooth keyboard with a trackpoint fully works with android 🤯
There's even a little mouse pointer with right click operations and hotkeys. This is not using Samsung's Dex either!
That was the easy part; recovering this #Trackpoint from an #IBM keyboard....
Now I have to somehow turn this into a USB #HID device for my forthcoming #Cyberdeck 😎
And the #TrackPoint wish I can "hack in" by replacing the #SpaceBar with several 1U keys and shoving the 3 mouse buttons and trackpoint in between!

@miller I'm using it always, sometimes even if mouse or trackball connected to the laptop. Just because I can move the cursor without moving hands away from keyboard (yes, I'm lazy) :dragnhappy:
