And ... My 2015 MacBook is once again working well! The replacement battery is fully charged, and I'll break it in more tomorrow (possibly playing festive music).

I wanted to finish the repair today instead of tomorrow, due to concerns that the computer might still be dead after the attempted repair, which would have been depressing on Christmas. But everything turned out great, and I'm feeling ridiculously pleased about it.

It's the first time I've ever poked around inside a Mac, and it's been a while since I've tinkered with any hardware at all. But it's very satisfying to get something working again, isn't it?

I have ideas about what to do with that computer's extended life, but that can wait for another time.

For Bay Area Maker Faire this year, I created some giveaway keychain PCBs based on the EMF Explorer Badge, and folks got to practice soldering using iFixit's Power Series portable soldering stations. Big thanks to @oshpark for producing the circuit boards, and @iFixit for sharing their soldering irons for folks to use. Catch me at an event, and I might just have a few left to share. #ifixit #oshpark

Lately I've been repairing a lot of old clothing, especially hiking clothes where the fabric often outlasts the stitches and "fashion" hardly matters. Using both hand-sewing and a borrowed sewing machine.

I did a really good local community sewing class and these great tutorials from #ifixit (evidently it's not just about gadget repair). Perhaps the only stitch missing from this page is saddle-stitch for repairing leather,

So I've got this old mid-2015 MacBook Pro Retina. I have a newer mac which is in fine condition, but I've kept the old one around because the hardware still seems quite good (or at least it did until the battery died recently).

I am aware that Apple recalled the battery on this model at some point, but according to Apple, my laptop's serial number is ineligible for a replacement. I originally bought it (from Apple) as a refurbished model back in (I think) 2016, so perhaps the battery was already replaced at that time.

Anyway, I decided to try to replace the battery, and ordered a new one from ifixit. I read several repair guides (including the ifixit one), watched some tutorial videos, and decided to attempt the work today.

It's a good thing I didn't just leave the old laptop sitting on a shelf, because once I'd opened it, I observed the old battery is quite swollen and probably also quite hazardous. Feeling kind of scared now, tbh. Any words of advice or encouragement?

Are your strings of lights not working? Check out our step-by-step guide to get them up and running so they don’t end up in a landfill.

Small win, but I wanted to play some old #Playstation2 games and used some guides from #ifixit and others to clean and lubricate the drive assembly successfully resolving the issue!

Now I need to replace the sticks on some of the controllers I’ve found as they’re the rubber that has turned to goo since they were bought in the early 00s.

Bay Area Makerfaire was another wonderful year, and I got to teach two EMF Explorer Badge workshops. With #iFixit sponsoring the soldering irons this year, it was SO much nicer having quality tools on hand for the students to learn with. Huge thanks to iFixit for helping make the event a success. A well-tinned soldering iron makes for happy students.

While reading about iFIXIT’s new FixBot, I learned that IFIXIT has had app difficulties with Apple’s App Store in the past. Back in 2015, IFIXIT “tore down the Apple TV and Siri Remote” that had been sent to it by Apple. IFIXIT, which had an iOS app, explained what happened next:

A few days later, we got an email from Apple informing us that we violated their terms and conditions—and the offending developer account had been banned. Unfortunately, iFixit’s app was tied to that same account, so Apple pulled the app as well. Their justification was that we had taken ‘actions that may hinder the performance or intended use of the App Store, B2B Program, or the Program.’

It sounds like the disappearing of the IFIXIT app was downstream from the suspension of IFIXIT’s developer account. Fortunately, the 2015 post comes with a happy 2025 update:

iFixit has an all-new mobile app in the App Store and the Android Play Store. This archived post is about the previous version of the app. We spent our time in the penalty box, and Apple has reinstated our account. We appreciate their consideration.

Ihave never used the iFIXIT app (the website works well enough for me), but I am glad to read that it is once again an option for people with iPhones and iPads.

I am a fan of IFIXIT and I have used its guides to make repairs/upgrades to computers and other electronics (still on my to-do list is following its guide to replace the battery in my Google Pixel 6a). IFIXIT has introduced a new AI assistant called FixBot. My generally negative takes on consumer AI and AI assistances are well-documented here. But FixBot sounds fairly reasonable:

You tell it what’s happening: your phone dies at 30%, your washing machine won’t drain, your mower sputters and stalls. It asks follow-up questions. It eliminates possibilities. It thinks out loud with you, the way a master technician would, until the diagnosis clicks into place. Then it finds the parts and helps direct you to the appropriate repair guide.

That the FixBot “finds the parts and helps direct you to the appropriate repair guide” points to why it sounds reasonable on its face. I quote again from the IFIXIT announcement:

And unlike the generic AI tools you’ve tried, FixBot actually knows what it’s talking about. It pulls its answers from our 125k repair guides, our massive question-answer forum, and our huge cache of PDF manuals. It knows how to find ideal bolt torque from a table in a manual. It can read a part schematic and tell you the part number you need to order. Importantly, it’s much better than other systems at not making stuff up. It’s not going to tell you to cut the blue wire when there is no blue wire.

One issue with many of the AI tools is where their “data” comes from and how they interpret it. Based on this description, it sounds like FixBot will be drawing from IFIXIT’s own guides, documentation, and products. None of this is to say that I plan to use the FixBot. IFIXIT’s search functionality is good and I have never had an issue with finding guides (where they exist) for specific products and reading through them. But if FixBot works like IFIXIT promises, it may well be a decent tool for a good cause (a cause made more important by AI-driven price increases for RAM and solid state drives).
