Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9.4 Released with Various Changes

A new version of the Raspberry Pi Imager, a free, open source and cross-platform image writing utility (think Etcher, but much redder) is out with an array of modest improvements. Serving as the first release since last September, Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9.4 adds to the big UI changes the previous version brought with some quality-of-life adjustments. For instance, in the OS customisation settings there’s an Enable SSH tab. This now uses “regex to perform some light validation” of public keys to avoid boot failures, having previously just assumed any key entered was correct. Raspberry Pi Imager 9.4 includes an ‘Exclude :sys_more_orange:

Excellent advice in this print from @retroswim. Thanks for the color print!

There's an ImageWriter II on Goodwill that closes today, currently going for USD 15.- I'm not in the market, but that seems pretty inexpensive, even if it needs some work.

Ewwwwww….

I’m guessing replace these with rubber washers? Any recommended dimensions?

Oh man. I should be asleep, but now I’ve had an even *worse* #MARCHintosh idea instead. Combine the two terrible ideas so far…

You post me a photo or something to scan using the #ImageWriter with the ThunderScan installed instead of ink.

Then I print that file from the same ImageWriter onto iron-on transfer paper and to send back to you to make into fashion!

So… ummm… the first #GlobalTalk #ImageWriter colour high-fashion iron-on job seems to be happening… #MARCHintosh 🖨️ 🌈

EDIT: Entries are now closed. Hat-o-matic decision post to follow shortly :D

Now with iron-ons in mind, let’s do another #MARCHintosh giveaway!

Reply to this toot with ‘moof’ if you’d like a chance to win one of these #ImageWriter printed, full-colour #dogcow iron-on transfers.

Make the fashion statement of the year 💁

Entries will be drawn Tuesday 4 March.

New super-terrible #MARCHintosh idea just dropped…

I still have some of those iron-on sheets that go through the #ImageWriter. The ImageWriter is available on #GlobalTalk, complete with colour ribbon if desired.

You could make beautiful things to print out onto an iron-on transfer here, and then I could post that sheet back to you for you to apply to a garment to make it the highest of fashion statements 🖨️👕

Update - latest release allows using surl-server as only a printer emulator. It may be useful to people interested in printing, but not in my programs*, who only have one USB-serial adapter.
With surl-server 21.2.0, just set

tty: /dev/nonexistent
aux_tty: /dev/ttyUSB0

In the config file, and you're good to go.

I released my Apple II things again. This time there is no change in my programs, but the surl-server proxy can now pretend to be a dot-matrix printer, and print whatever your Apple II sends to it!

So #ImageWriter emulation on my proxy status update: I ditched IWEM and went with FreeDOS's implementation, which is GPLv2+. It works well for both graphics and text - including French charset!

Tested with
✅ Quicktake for Apple II
✅ Dazzle Draw
✅ PrintShop
✅ AppleWorks screen dump
❌ AppleWorks Print feature 🤔

2 printouts on my Apple IIc. One of them is a screen of text from AppleWorks, the other one a picture.

Raspberry Pi Imager Ported to Qt 6, Now Uses AppImages on Linux

You don’t need to own a Raspberry Pi to make use of the Raspberry Pi Imager as this nifty image writer makes flashing ISO, IMG, and similar files to USB drives and SD cards mighty easy. Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9 was released this week and it’s a big update. For one, this open-source and cross-platform image writer now uses Qt 6. This provides a stack of underlying improvements in terms of stability, but also some visual ones as Raspberry Pi say the Qt 6 port provides “a lightly refreshed UI throughout on all platforms.” Also of note, Raspberry Pi Imager :sys_more_orange:

Okay, now that the #ImageWriter is happily back on the network again, let’s try printing what it scanned yesterday!

First is the mono bitmap MacPaint file, dithering done by ThunderScan software.

Second is the greyscale image, dithering done by the MacPalette driver.

With netatalk, a TashTalk hat, TashRouter, and CUPS on the Raspberry Pi, we can do clever things like share a II printer over with an iPhone using AirPrint!

This screenshot was printed from my phone to the ImageWriter II.

Interestingly, this was just fixed in the latest netatalk 2.3.2!

If you are lucky enough to have an Imagewriter color cartridge, this will help you restore it and you can put a new ribbon from MacEffects in it.
