Looks like a bunch of Internet trolls just wrote an IRC bot to join all #IRC channels of all public IRC servers on the whole Internet, bridging their own channel to the world for broadcasting racial slurs... ​:woozy_baa:​ On #LiberaChat, it lasted 10 minutes before it was K-Lined by sysops, and they're still trying to make a come back based on my logs (update: they did it on and off for hours with different botnet IPs).

Just signed off of #liberachat while their relays are being invaded and all sorts of racist messages are being sent out globally on all channels. I wish the @liberachat admins all the best!

A few years out... I'm still confused what the point of the Freenode reset was.

Like I get the takeover and the ops leaving and starting Libera Chat and Freenode taking over channels that promoted Libera Chat.

But wtf did they think a network reset would do? Like, if you're going to kick literally everyone, what was the point in taking over the network?

You may (or may not) recall the #Freenode takeover mess. However, thanks to #IRC being an open and widely supported protocol, many projects migrated to #LiberaChat with as little disruption as possible.

Good news is, your walled garden is unlikely to suffer the fate of Freenode — because it already is there, from day one. What are you going to do when your project suddenly gets banned and you lose access to everything — including all the data that you shouldn't have kept there in the first place? Of course, come up with some corporate bullshit of "join us on our illustrious journey to the next walled garden, and don't forget to install another 200 MiB privacy nightmare app not to be excluded from our community".

We take #LiberaChat completely for granted. Like the floor we walk on, or the air that we breathe it's just there. It works. We use it every day with #Librecast and it works so well we mostly forget there are real people that make it all work.

• Many folks went from #GitHub to @Codeberg / #Codeberg to do their #FLOSS development as it too has #IssueTrackers and means to discuss things without #loginwalled read-only access. Others like @torproject have their own @gitlab / #GitLab servers #SelfHosted.

• If you want a #Chat then consider #LiberaChat if you don't demand #privacy. Otherwise @delta / #deltaChat and/or #XMPP via @monocles & @gajim may be an option.

• If you do want some #LoginWalling for some reason, consider @zulip / #ZulipChat as it has a nice #threading model that can handle both asynchronous communication and high traffic without becoming unfindable or unarchiveable. Otherwise there's like @RocketChat / #RocketChat which also works great by my own experience.

Case in point: #discord just makes it more cumbersome and painful than anything. It's basically #Slack + #MicrosoftTeams, but worse…
