9:27am Jack Rabbit by Biréli Lagrène from Blue Guitar

There are #jackrabbit tracks in the snow on my covered back deck, which is 4'/1.3m off the ground, with a single set of stairs to the ground. They apparently crossed the whole deck to inspect my barbecue.

Nosy bunnies!

Surprising facts [1] about animals, part 1375:

The white-tailed jackrabbit, which is actually a species of hare also known as the prairie hare or "white jack", or simply "jack", in groups is capable of #geometry. It owes this to the fact that hares are territorial and not social.

When multiple jacks are present at a round bowl, a group of 2 will always arrange itself at 180 degree spacing, 3 at 120 degree spacing, and 4 at 90 degree spacing. I don't have a bowl big enough to see if the pattern holds true for groups of 5 or more.

It's pretty neat!

Ce matin le petit lièvre à profité de la branche cassé de l'agrume qui pousse dans la verrière et que j'ai accroché accidentellement. C'est son petit déjeuner ce matin..et c'est comme au restaurant pour lui, c'est si frais.../ This morning the jackrabbit who adopt our yard ( first in 28 years) make an breakfast from cutting branch from agrume tree (not pomello not orange not citrus, we will see!) They're heeeeeeeeeeeere ...

Seriously, this is what I see out my front window every night in the winter. Except I was moving and using the blinky-light box when I took this, so they're looking around and trying to figure out how to react to me.

Normally they're all just sitting upright, and all looking directly at me. I'm not kidding.

Photograph of a residential street in winter, seen (badly) out a house window. The street is covered with packed snow, and there are 5 jackrabbits (actually a species of hare) sitting in various positions and places. They are all observing the photographer.

@Satori

Awfully cute! Ours are just starting to get over the worst of their skittishness. When I was shovelling snow yesterday, one of them came running down the street and sat about 20ft away from me while trying to decide if he could make it to the bowl without getting closer to me.

I wonder if Edmonton jacks are related to Regina jacks, and if so, whether ours are considered the hillbilly redneck cousins no one talks about.

Desert Jackrabbit in Arches — This jackrabbit pauses amidst the arid landscape of Arches National Park. The animal's alert posture and large ears are characteristic of this desert dweller. The scene evokes a sense of peacefulness and showcases the unique beauty of the Utah desert.

I've done October challenges for 3 years, and decided to tackle #Weretober this year - with my own custom list! Some suggestions from Patrons (thank you!), & some critters I think look cool.

Honestly, as a desert-dweller, I think a were-jackrabbit would be one of the scarier things to encounter...

This is a #video without sound of a #jackrabbit standing still and looking at me to observe whether I'm a threat.

Then it runs a bit further away and continues to observe and then it moves out of view

#Jackrabbit in my front yard today. This isn't the young one I saw yesterday; this is one of the adults that lives in the area.

Unlike true #rabbits, #hares (jackrabbits are hares, not rabbits... complain to someone) don't dig burrows. Instead, they just kind of scoop out a shallow depression in the dirt, and then lie in it. Hares aren't social animals, and live alone, so they don't really need a burrow. When they lie motionless in these bowls with their ears flat against their body and their legs pulled in underneath them, they look surprisingly close to rocks.

This one spent several hours in this spot this morning while it was windy and rainy. I opened the door slowly to get a picture, but after the first "click" sound, he or she took off.

Captions:

1) "I'm watching you closely. I don't trust you."
2) "Nope, I'm outa here."
3) "I must return to my home planet, my people need me."

A wild jackrabbit (a kind of hare, not rabbit) lies in a shallow depression in a suburban lawn. With its ears laid flat against its body and its legs pulled in underneath itself,, the only thing that gives away the fact that it isn't the rock it looks like is it's eyes. One eye can be seen here on the near side of its face, keeping a careful eye on the photographer. Here, the jackrabbit is running off away from the photographer, after being spooked by the shutter noise of the first picture taken. He or she is captured mid-stride and has both ears erect, the front paws halfway through a stride, and the back feet coming down for another hop / push-off.The jackrabbit caught in mid-hop here. All four feet are well off the ground and pointing basically straight down, making it appear as if it is hovering or flying.

"I must return to my home planet; my people need me."

The last couple of days, I've seen one of this year's "crop" of new jackrabbits running around. Reminder: jackrabbits aren't rabbits, they're hares, and so they're solitary, not social animals like rabbits. Once they're weaned and not much else, they basically run solo and free.

But this one is obviously big enough to be a late-stage juvenile. He or she is about half the size of the full-grown adults - and she very much behaves like an excited kid, bouncing around excitedly and being full of energy and curiosity.

Tonight, she came bouncing down the street while we were preparing to go for a walk, and ended up in the middle of the front lawn. I opened the door slowly and spoke to her, and she watched for a minute before bounding off. Then later, I saw her go into our back yard. She might be living somewhere back there.

Sorry, no pictures. Too skittish to stay in one spot while I go get a camera.

3/4 Bust portrait drawing of an anthropomorphic rabbit smirking and looking at the viewer. He has brown, black and cream markings, orange eyes and a mohawk. He's wearing a denim vest.

"Why would I bother turning my underside brown for the summer? It's not like anyone can see... wait."

It's hard to tell from these pictures, but his back half is flopped on his side, and his back feet are sticking out behind him (or her). Pretty relaxed for a wild prey animal. You know the drill: white-tailed jackrabbit, which is actually a species of hare, not rabbit.

A closer view of a white-tailed jackrabbit sprawled on a suburban lawn in the middle of the Canadian prairies. It has mottled brown-grey fur on its upper sides, with dark markings at the tips of its ears. It is lying flat on the grass, with the rear half of its body rotated to flop on its side, with the rear feet sticking out behind. The visible underparts have white fur, kind of ruining the camouflage effect.A white-tailed jackrabbit sprawled on a suburban lawn. It's head is lying on the ground, ears mostly swept back, rear half rotated and flopped on its side, rear feet sticking out behind. All in all, a relaxed hare.

A #jackrabbit [1] I interrupted this evening when he was eating my front lawn. He was head-down in the grass just a moment before I snapped this - they're fast, and skittish.
