Some critiques of #JohnMichaelGreer I encountered. I'm not familiar with the man and his writings enough to say, but they seem valid. I wouldn't be surprised if true, since people that profess they understand everything often fall prey to their own ego.

It's even stranger if you've been reading his work for a while. I first started reading his blog about 10 years ago when anthropogenic climate change was his primary focus. Somewhere along the way, he became obsessed with climate activists' hypocrisy while completely ignoring the larger number of people who refuse to even acknowledge climate change is happening.

I mean yes, sure, it's obnoxious to see some well-known climate activist take private flights all over the globe and have a larger carbon footprint than the rest of us, but that pales in comparison to the fossil fuel industry spending billions on obfuscating climate science, or politicians who do the same. He never mentions either of those, and he refuses to acknowledge that they both have downstream effects. People's opinions aren't sui generis, and multi-billion dollar misinformation campaigns exist because they work.

Then when Covid happened he went in more of a MAGA direction. No matter what the topic is, he'll often somehow find a way to shoehorn in some of the most trite stereotypes about SJWs. He mascots, he nut-picks, and he does it often enough that I've come to the conclusion that he'll argue in bad faith more often than not. I can't count the number of times he's included that "fat lefty street protestor person screaming at the heavens" pic in one of his weekly blogs. Right-wing memes from 2016 are alive and well on his site.

As you familiarize yourself with his writings, it becomes clear that Archdruid Greer is not a fan of grassroots social movements. Peaceful protest is a dangerous waste of time. In Greer's words, "If you plan on nonviolent protest, I trust you realize that any tyrant worth the name can simply have you rounded up, shot in the back of the head, and dumped in a mass grave; there's your protest."

Greer thinks people should NOT try to change the system...they should simply cope with the collapse of industrial civilization by fortifying their personal capacity to live without it. If you ask him if his personal coping strategy--while absolutely necessary--is sufficient to break the death grip of corporate power over the planet and our lives, be prepared for a tongue-lashing. If you have the temerity to voice your doubts that his approach will be able to counteract a dying system's propensity for ecocide, resource wars and tyranny, you may find yourself purged from his blog like I was. In my case, the entire history of our previous discourse was expunged from THE ARCHDRUID REPORT. I had no idea druids favored these Stalinist tactics.

"It so happens, though, that a particular kind of incompetence does indeed tend to turn to violence when every other option has fallen flat, and goes down in a final outburst of pointless bloodshed. It’s unpleasantly likely at this point that the climate change movement, or some parts of it, may end up taking that route into history’s dumpster; here again, we’ll get to that a little further on in this post."
