A junco flies in for a bite while a cardinal chirps?

I thought these were northern cardinal chirps when I watched and heard the video on my phone, but I think I am mistaken listening to it now.

Two birds trying to share in the snow

A house finch backed in deep into the feeder to get that seed and faces off with a junco sparrow.

SQUAAAAAAAWK—Someone doesn’t like sharing

I think this is the northern cardinal squawking, but I am not entirely sure.

Birds in snow

A lot of activity at the bird feeder this morning.

There is not much seed remaining and its toward the back of the feeder below the snow that we got.

2026-01-18

A collection of videos captured by the camera feeder of dark-eyed junco sparrow behavior including chirps and flight from the other day.

The Juncos visited again earlier this morning and yesterday. I read that they like to scavenge on the ground rather than from hanging feeders so maybe that is why they prefer the camera feeder with its seed basin?

Because I have not come up with a good anti-squirrel cage that will also be suitable for somewhat larger birds, I only fill the base of the feeder with seed. The squirrels do come and get it, but they also seem to leave enough seed for the house finches, house sparrows, dark-eyed junco sparrows, and the one northern cardinal.

First Junco at the camera feeder

A dark-eyed junco sparrow finds the camera feeder for the first time and chows down on a couple of seeds.

This handsome little fella was over by the pond. Slate-colored Dark-eyed Junco. #DailyWalk

A sparrow-sized bird with a longish tail is perched on a wire in the middle of a woven wire fence. The bird is slate gray, with darker head, and pinkish beak. There is some white showing on the breast and tail. The dark eye is basically invisible on the dark head. Dry pasture grass in the background.
