The Japanese army surprised the British by using locally-obtained bicycles to speed the traversal of over 400 miles (700 km) south to Singapore. Japanese forces reached Johor just north of Singapore by mid-January 1942 and the British troops in Singapore surrendered to the Japanese on February 15, 1942.
