Die Landschaft auf der Südseite des Ätna oberhalb des Rifugio Sapienza ist von einer einzigartigen, mondähnlichen Szenerie geprägt. Beim Wandern durchquere ich karge Lavafelder, deren schwarze, erstarrte Oberfläche von zahlreichen Rissen durchzogen ist. Die Lavadecke ist rau und scharfkantig, oft mit einer verkrusteten oder blasigen Struktur, die von früheren Ausbrüchen zeugt. Zwischen den Lavaflächen öffnen sich Blicke auf zerklüftete Krater und Aschefelder, die zusammen ein faszinierendes, fast surreal anmutendes Panorama bieten.
