That was a very interesting conference, lots to learn and new encounters. The R&E community doesn’t face the same challenges as the general tech industry. But I think sharing more experience between the two would be useful.

Keep an eye on the presentations when they’ll be published. A lot of them are worth watching. The conference value lies in the networking though.

A presentation slide discussing the concept of "Leadership Value." It outlines a formula: What You Do x Who You Impact x Why It Matters and than derives a value statement formula out of it with an example.

I help [WHO] achieve [WHAT] by [HOW] which drives [BUSINESS IMPACT].A presentation slide with the title "Confidence Debugging Framework" along with a series of steps: Identify, Isolate, Fix, Deploy, and Monitor. The text is displayed in bold, colorful fonts against a purple gradient background.A very yellow presentation slide with the bold purple text “Spark Joy!!!” and a with festive and happy icons and emojis.

Changing context can be useful sometimes. Let’s see what there is to learn here.

This week, I heard it was mentioned by Shaun Lewis from O’Reilly Media in a session on measuring performance in teams.

Later, someone told me Giffgaff had been talking about it too when discussing team morale.

It stopped me for a second. Not in a “look what I built” way, more in a “this is actually landing with people” way.

@ramsey As so many eng leads (including @hazelweakly who I am only tagging to say thank you & you were great!) said at #LeadDev this week: Data can lie. 😅 They keep trying the same thing and expecting new results. I have questions where the truth actually is on this one. 🤓

Reflecting on an incredible experience speaking at @TheLeadDev's conference last week! Very grateful to have been accepted as a speaker and for the amazing support throughout.

I enjoyed discussing challenges growing teams in the era of layoffs, and hopeful that my talk can provide some inspiration by treating teaching as a core engineering skill, applying lessons from pedagogy. Slides here 👉🏻 speakerdeck.com/alismith/creat

Myself on stage with a background branded with the LDX3 conference logo in purple. To the left of the stage, there is a screen with live captions. Further to the left and above is a slide from the presentation, showing two people, working on a laptop together. There is a Code Your Future logo in the top right and text in the bottom right reading "We teach people who don't have access to traditional education how to code"On the left is a LDX3 conference badge for Ali Smith. Showing Natcap / Code Your Future organisations, and Staff Product Engineer / Core Maintainer job titles. Beneath this it says LeadDev speaker.

On the right is a box containing 2 iced biscuits. One in the top left says Thank You! with a British flag and a London red bus underneath. Under this is the LDX3 logo. One in the bottom right has the LDX3 logo in the center of a TfL roundel logo.

So many speakers at #LeadDev #LDX3 shared links to look into later, and I've found many more when I started following those up.

This post should be handy for me to keep track of them all, and for anyone else who might like to see if anything grabs them. Enjoy!

Are there good practices documented somewhere for testing related to database datasets? I'm struggling to be satisfied with a good definition of a relevant dataset. What use cases should i ignore and how to efficiently maintain this dataset along the addition of new tests (and data)? Any tips to share? #tdd #testing #database #php #dev #development #leaddev #bestpractices #mysql #mongodb #postgresql

Exactly a year ago, together with Giorgos Ampavis we had the honor to share the stage at the #LeadDev Berlin conference to tell all about the migration from native mobile development to #Flutter that we have performed at Tide - the leading business financial platform in the UK with >10% market share.

The recording is now up on my YouTube! 👉🏻 youtu.be/zuOdjy9SWio

This week I was at LeadDev Meetup hosted by Softwire!

Here are a few things I learnt:

🌃 Creating a team based approach to out of hours support, instead of relying on good will alone, can help businesses meet their out of hours requirements.

🌱 The GROW model is an approach to coaching people to become their best.

🎻 Being a good Engineering Manager is simlar to a conductor. You invite people to bring their skills in at the right time to solve a particular challenge.

Back from conference travels in NY, and returning to my usual schedule of coding streams! A number of folks I chatted with at #LeadDev were curious about what watching a developer stream their day-to-day work looks like, so here's an official invite. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I stream myself developing from 1PM until I finish for the day (usually at least 3-4 hours, sometimes more if I'm in a groove.)

Drop by twitch.tv/brainbetter to watch! I'm building a jigsaw puzzle game in #Godot4 using C#. I'm told it's nice second-screen viewing if you miss the vague sense of having a co-worker at the next desk over while working from home.

Which is why it felt like a bright omen when, on the heels of that conversation, I saw that the talk videos from the conference had been posted. When I opened the page on my phone, I saw myself. #LeadDev chose this enby to represent the speakers for this year’s conference in the header image. It gave me an answer to that question: I’m sure there are people who don’t take me seriously because of how I look - I’m sure for almost any speaker, that’s true, especially folks who don’t quite look like the stereotype of a tech leader. But the folks who know this audience - the team behind the conference - believe those people are not the majority. I was proud to show that photo to my parents. And I’m honored to get to represent the amazing speakers I met in New York in this little, symbolic way.
