A stone surrounded by moss. The top of the stone is mostly covered by a whitish lichen with many round, black fruiting bodies like tiny buttons. Black borders mark off individual lichens. A few small clumps of moss have taken root in cracks in the stone.

A large patch of a "bone" lichen. Pale green tubes, mostly hanging down, somewhat bent, lumpy. Some are darker green, others almost white. Among them are several fruiting bodies, apothecia; they are like bowls with pale rims and painted a greenish brown inside. Background; dark brown Douglas-fir trunk, green of the forest behind.

Reindeer lichen, Cladonia sp., and tiny Cladonia verticillata, Ladder lichen, on a mossy bank. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/202 #VancouverIsland #Lichens #CladoniaLichens #NaturePhotography

On a bed of moss, one single Reindeer lichen, Cladonia portentosa, stands out: almost pure white, with twice- or thrice-forked tips. One stalk is broken, showing that it's a hollow tube. Between the branches, there's a fruiting body of another Cladonia. Off to the right there are two Ladder Cladonias, a pixie-cup lichen, unique in that from the centre of the cups, sprout new stalks, each with its own cup. The cups are light brownish with reddish rims.

Some lichens are growing in small patches on the vertical side of a wooden fence. A couple of species of fruticose oak moss branch up from the surface, like seaweed on the ocean of air. The one at the top is possibly a powdery blue green colored Evernia, the one bottom right a olive green lungwort lichen. There are small clumps of blue green shield lichens, with overlapping "scales" making them raised from the surface. The wood of the fence is covered with green algae, working hard to help decompose the fence.

Cherry trees have bark full of openings called lenticels, which are part of how the trees breathe. They look like horizontal thin breaks in the bark. Here we have a photo of some lenticels full of lichens, some green, some blue green, and some white. They are foliose and crustose. They are very small, which indicates that the tree is restraining their growth in some manner. The bark itself is reddish brown and rough textured. The image looks like stripes of bark interspersed with strips of lichen. In younger cherry trees the bark is a glossy reddish brown.Cherry trees have bark full of openings called lenticels, which are part of how the trees breathe.
