Stopped at the on the way towards holiday visits this year, the was gorgeous AND there were cool !

A starkly beautiful landscape shot of the bridge spanning Selah Creek. Cirrus clouds paint pretty pictures in the sky overhead.A bit of old basalt, positively covered in lichens. Pale greens and olive yellows dominate.

An upright club lichen on an old, black stump. Each "club" (podetium) is a pale green pillar about 1 cm. tall, covered with tiny, powdery balls (soredia). The fruiting bodies, apothecia, are borne singly on the tips of these clubs; some are bright red. A few of the podetia are tipped, instead, with a small cup. At the base of these clubs the tiny, brighter green "leaves" (actually scales, or squamules) are the first stage of the lichen.

Yesterday I forgot why I didn't go to the parks this past week, and saw all the fallen branches and trees covering the trails. The saws were buzzing in the background. The main trail was clear, thanks Seattle Parks Dept.! I did get to see a nice display of lichens on mossy branches by the sides of the trail.

Some nicely branched, blue green fruticose lichens spring out from a bed of moss on these two twigs. There are also some smaller green ones. A variety of foliose lichens in shades of blue gray to powdery blue clasp the twigs. These are lying on bed of brown decaying tree leaves.Another set of twigs, looking very artsy with the tufts of blue green lichens contrasting with the leaves in various shades of brown.

Cladonia lichens, with bright red apothecia. Part 3 of the annual "Things that Made me Happy this Year" list. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/202 #VancouverIsland #Lichens #NaturePhotography

An upright club lichen growing on a tree trunk. Each "club" is a pale green pillar about 1 cm. tall, covered with tiny, powdery balls (soredia). The fruiting bodies, apothecia, are borne on the tips of these clubs and are bright red. One club, on the left, holds 10 of these red tips.

Sapsucker wells and resin rivulets on a Douglas-fir. With Cladonia lichens. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/202 #VancouverIsland #Birds #Lichens #Trees #NaturePhotography

The trunk of an evergreen tree. It has been drilled by a Red-breasted Sapsucker, who makes a series of holes, in rows and columns on the side of living trees. Each hole is about a finger-tip wide. The tree has responded by oozing sticky resins to heal the wounded area. It drips down in yellow and whitish rivulets, and has hardened there. On both sides of the trunk, where there are no sapsucker holes, Cladonia lichens are growing.

A few white and gray polypores start growing on a fallen lichen and moss covered branch.

A fallen hardwood tree branch with dark gray bark striped with pinkish brown has an array of lichen and a few nascent polypores growing on it. The fungi are mostly white with some light tan edges and light gray mottling, and are fairly small. The lichens are mostly blue green and fruticose, commonly called oakmosses or old man's beard, and one foliose green shield lichen. The moss is the common cattail moss. The branch has fallen on a bed of dead brown leaves.

Pale green lichen covers the bark of a tree. It has the texture of a dust bunny; bubbles and bumps and smears. This lichen is composed of tiny balls of algae wrapped in fungal hyphae (hair-thin threads). A few leafy structures at upper right are another lichen, Cladonia sp., as is the erect stalk at lower right, a fruiting body of that same Cladonia.
