Pan de Muertos
The bread of the dead is bittersweet,
flavored with anise and oranges,
its golden crust glazed with sugar,
almost the color of marigolds.
The round loaf represen'
the circle of life and death.
On top, extra dough shapes
the skull and crossbones,
reminding us of the death
that waits under our living skin.
To taste the bread is to weep for
what has been lost, yet hope
for what is still to come.

Any suggestions for a #LiveJournal type platform I can use for keeping a #blog? I want something that won't just vanish one day (a concern I have with the fediverse), but isn't covered in ads either.

"I think it's gotten easy to forget we used to do this all the time. Not necessarily the internet at large, and believe me, I'm well aware the pre-algorithm internet was anything but an endless vista of peaches and sunshine, but the geek community part of the internet. Which, believe it or not, hasn't been all of it more or less since Usenet. The bookish, SFF, community-minded people who identified as geeks, not to make money off a new demographic, but just because that's what we were. Who use..."

I like the ListenBrainz widget in the new version of @gotosocial, it reminds me of the time I had an Audioscrobbler/Last.fm widget on my Livejournal 🥹
Too bad, so sad.
The second screenshot below is interesting. Why is LiveJournal using an insecure DKIM signature algorithm and not including the Subject line in the signature, even though pretty much every standard DKIM configuration includes it? Given all the other shenanigans with LiveJournal since the Russians bought it, this is… suspicious.

“In an upcoming paper, our team at the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure has uncovered stark differences in how different cultures harness the #internet. …
The history of the internet offers some examples. Take the Russian social media/blogging platform #LiveJournal. When it was popular in the mid-2000s, English-speaking users knew it as a space for young people to share their feelings or geek out about Harry Potter. But if you're a Russian speaker, you probably know LiveJournal very differently – as an important site of public intellectualism and political discourse, playing a rare role in hosting voices from the opposition.”

Just the thoughts and observations I've tagged as #civilization that I've made as journal entries. That things are getting better, just painfully slowly. #livejournal #lj https://mrflash818.livejournal.com/tag/civilization/
I understand why it's nice - esp. on mobile phones - to have posts no longer than* X* length. Browsability matters!
However, limiting the default characters significantly limits #mastodon adoption, as it is inappropriate for what they want to do... which could be everything from #journalism to #writing to #fanfiction.
But devs solved this problem 25 years ago on #livejournal, with the lj-cut tag.
Hey, @Gargron ... a time-tested #opensource solution that we KNOW works!

Remember that whole import saga I had moving from #LiveJournal to #Plume ? Well I copied my docs from a notes platform and made them available through my own little website and through Gemini - gemini://mmn.on.ca/docs/ ! https://www.mmn.ca/docs/

In honor of #Satan and Friday the 13th, I created The #Ethical #Society Of Satan.
https://ethical-society-of-satan.dreamwidth.org/
It's a #journal #community for #humanism, #atheism, #atheists, #agnostics, #satanism, #philosophy and more!
DW is a beautiful fork of #LiveJournal. Hurray for #LibreSoftware #freeSoftware
I want to create a Community on #Dreamwidth for #musicians, #soundEngineers, #audioEngineers, #producers, #guitarists, #bassists, #synth players, #drummers, and the like.
What should it be called?
It'll be affiliated with #TheFreaksClub
https://thefreaksclub.dreamwidth.org/
Think of it as being the #LiveJournal based alternative to forums like TalkBass, and @lemmystudio 😜
Not as a replacement, of course. Just as a different format; a home carved out in a different section of the web.
It's ...been a day. #livejournal https://mrflash818.livejournal.com/307596.html
I listen to a broad spectrum of music. Anyone interested in browsing videos spotlighting bits of that spectrum can go to my ancient livejournal. I still post there, almost exclusively music videos. http://i.livejournal.com
💙 Flashback Friday #7 💙 – LiveJournal
Ah, LiveJournal. The birthplace of fandom rants, angsty poetry, and cryptic song lyrics in your post titles. LiveJournal was more than just a blogging platform—it was a cultural cornerstone for internet communities before the rise of social media.

dreamwidth/livejournal have a whole culture around icons adding meaning to comments and posts ^^ it could be reaction images, fandoms, characters, ships, signaling it's a specific event prompt fill, rp between two different users, or in-jokes and stuff like that. The icon creating community is really big and people can have hundreds of icons saved on their computer just for dw! It's sort of like talking in the tags on tumblr, meme references in AO3 content warning tags, or hashtags on other websites. I mostly read dw/lj on anon and it's pretty interesting. I made a new account recently to post fic myself and apparently you can pick only specific tags for that icon to show up when you post to help convey your meaning, which is neat.
there's even a whole fanlore page on the topic, as well as resources to start making your own icons if you're interested in that

Thanks, #LiveJournal, for reminding me I'm old on the internet by letting me know that my account is 20 years old. It's probably been at least 8 to 10 years since I posted there.
