woke up to a funny memory from more than 20 years ago when I went on a solo trip to Czech Republic, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

at the time I was still a pretty regular #livejournal user and met some mutuals who lived in various countries over there on my trip. one funny character, an idiosyncratic illustrator whose name I can't remember now, met me in Prague on one night and we went walking around. at one point we stopped at that bridge with a view of Prague castle...

I listen to a broad spectrum of music. Anyone interested in browsing videos spotlighting bits of that spectrum can go to my ancient livejournal. I still post there, almost exclusively music videos. i.livejournal.com

💙 Flashback Friday #7 💙 – LiveJournal

Ah, LiveJournal. The birthplace of fandom rants, angsty poetry, and cryptic song lyrics in your post titles. LiveJournal was more than just a blogging platform—it was a cultural cornerstone for internet communities before the rise of social media.

dreamwidth/livejournal have a whole culture around icons adding meaning to comments and posts ^^ it could be reaction images, fandoms, characters, ships, signaling it's a specific event prompt fill, rp between two different users, or in-jokes and stuff like that. The icon creating community is really big and people can have hundreds of icons saved on their computer just for dw! It's sort of like talking in the tags on tumblr, meme references in AO3 content warning tags, or hashtags on other websites. I mostly read dw/lj on anon and it's pretty interesting. I made a new account recently to post fic myself and apparently you can pick only specific tags for that icon to show up when you post to help convey your meaning, which is neat.

there's even a whole fanlore page on the topic, as well as resources to start making your own icons if you're interested in that

Thanks, #LiveJournal, for reminding me I'm old on the internet by letting me know that my account is 20 years old. It's probably been at least 8 to 10 years since I posted there.

A pay what you like zine:

You can snag a DRM-free download of @AlexandraGallant’s zine 'Iconic' on @itch.io — it has a bunch of old Livejournal icons made 20 years ago, plus short essays and thoughts on design, trends and pop culture from the time.

Any active #LiveJournal users out there?

My account still exists but I haven't logged in since it became a Russian-owned site way back when.

Before I reset my password, I want to know if they offer an export option so I can save my posts and, ideally, import them to my WordPress site.

Feel free to boost if you have a techie following!

Hey @jayeless, just stumbled on your blog piece from a year ago;

"I wish there was a federated, ActivityPub-based LiveJournal ... a blog, where I can make occasional friends-only posts (not private or password-protected posts), and take advantage of ActivityPub for authenticating my friends. A Dreamwidth-like distinction between true “friends” and more distant “subscribers” wouldn’t go amiss ..."

Long but educational thread on why it's critical to use different passwords for every site: bsky.app/profile/rahaeli.bsky.

(Rahaeli's account of the massive #LiveJournal password breach, and the headaches that caused for #Dreamwidth.)

Yesterday, we were having a discussion about #LiveJournal. Today, someone pointed out this BlueSky thread by Denise discussing how she get involved and what happened as she transitioned from being an employee to being staff.

@sepdroid @mattmcirvin There are a lot of former #LiveJournal folk on here. I’m one. Although I don’t want to be judged by my early 20s “thoughts” good lord no.

Anyone other than me trying to import from #livejournal in 2025? All tools seem borked, except #dreamwidth which is apparently in bitrot on install instructions (Ubuntu 16.04?) and also just lands you in another silo.

At a birthday in Bay Ridge last night, I met someone who was my #livejournal friend a bit more than 20 years ago, but we never met in person.😯 We didn't really keep in touch after livejournal fizzled out in Canada, but she married a semi prominent klezmer guy so we've occasionally saluted each other through him, or during an online event etc.

At first she was very confused, but then she made the connection and laughed and said "oh of course, you were my only non Russian friend on livejournal!"

You know how certain people are always complaining about their childhood being ruined? Consider this:
#LiveJournal is basically owned by the Russian authoritarian government;
#Twitter is basically owned by Nazis;
#Tumblr is owned by basically asholes…
So who’s ruining who’s childhood, huh?

In the case of LiveJournal, VC-backed SixApart bought LJ to gain time & users, but weren't a good fit with 's community & ethos. They scrapped the promises to its users, many who left for other LJ server sites. Later, they sold it to a Rus. oligarch-backed dotcom, as it had years of a head start in Russian social media. They bought it to obtain time & dominance in its niche.

It got bought by an oligarch's media co., now controlled by the Russian state.
