English Electric Lightning T.5 The Lightning was developed from the P.1 research aircraft, and was a fast-climbing Mach 2 interceptor which saw service with both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force. The power of two reheated Rolls-Royce Avon engines was enough to enable the aircraft to climb at over 20,000 ft/min! This trainer version is unusual for a fighter aircraft in that it had side by side seating (during this era the RAF's trainers all had this feature). The biggest failing of the aircraft was that initial versions had such a small fuel load that it was practically a 'point defence interceptor'. Yep, I got to fly in that baby once, way back in 1979. I still have the souvenir kit from it, which I need to rehome. A now-ground British Airways supersonic Concorde jet flies above the clouds. It has a very pointy nose and delta-shaped wings. You can see the curvature of the earth in the background. The sky is almost black above it because it is flying so high.

Celebrating the anniversary of the first airplane to ever fly at twice the speed of sound: the Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket, piloted by Scott Crossfield, achieved Mach 2 on 20 November 1953. The plane is now on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
