What else can I do to encourage my Facebook friends to set up on Fediverse instead of or in addition to the butterfly site that supposedly has “no algorithm”?
My next point to them is explaining how they can follow Pixelfed and PeerTube accounts with a single Mastodon or Key account.
I've got 7 years of online journaling on an IG account to process and archive. There's my entire American decade to download from Facebook. Fold it into a digital folder and store it on some hard drive somewhere in some flimsy box where it can accumulate pixeldust. Maybe we'll have devices to open our memories in the future. Maybe not.
I made a playlist with some tunes I used to listen to in the zeroes on another ethically questionable streaming platform we may have to abandon soon... I named it: "Pixelfed is full-blown zeroes nostalgia.” I listen to it attentively in the cool sunlight and feel suspended in my own life, hovering, neither here nor there. Or simultaneously somewhere. I don't always know how to hold linear time.
In 2008 I wrote an essay in a U.S. American college explicating Gronlandic Edit by of Montreal. I was very concerned with having a good taste in music. Considering the myriad ways in which music has saved my ass; a pretty keen investment. I was 22, I think. Though it's hard for me to imagine ever having been 22. Maybe that’s because I never felt entirely at home in my own life at the time. Chronically hovering. The anchoring-feature wasn't unlocked in my experience until years later.

And I don't feel irked or impatient. I feel relieved.
Oh, how fucking wonderful to be presented with IMPERFECTION. How gloriously sweet to witness the stumbling trial and error phase of a thing. How joyful to feel: YES! I AM ALSO THIS MESS! What a much needed rattling of the deep-conditioned meta-mindset.

Swept up by all the excitement over the sudden growth of, and interest in, #Pixelfed, yesterday I opened a publicly accessible Pixelfed server, https://gr8.pics
If you are interested in a new home for posting photos, one that is decentralized and connected to all ActivityPub servers, come on over and kick the tires. It must be good if Zuckerberg is afraid of it, and blocking Pixelfed links, right?
As far as I know, Pixelfed doesn't do server relaying, so photographs and short videos come in only through follow relationships, which is why I'd like to get people to start posting photos and following people elsewhere in the Fediverse who post pictures. Currently, the local and global timelines are limited. Over time, it will become filled with photos and short videos as more people make it their photo home.
Although I haven't tried it yet, it's supposed to import your #Instagram account.
The server is less than a day old. It may have problems I haven't found out about. But, if you're in a pioneering mood and would like a decentralized home for your photos and short videos, well, maybe worth checking this out. The server is small, but seems to be handling what there is effortlessly, but I'll scale it up if I see stress.

It feels better to dump content into an empty receptacle than to try to add something to an oversaturated and overflowing container that's bursting at the seams.
I can't compete for attention with all the sardines in the can. It's too blatantly obvious we are all just a bunch of defeated sardines anyway, so what's the point? But have you ever seen sardines actually swimming together? In-fcking-credible.
For that type of magic to occur, we need space to move. And lots of it.
If the internet can't run out of space, we have to try to swim out of the can to find it. Like a piscatorial resurrection. What would Sardine Jesus do? Toss over the conman's cans, convert some friends, and shape-shift through multidimensional portals in super-good-looking kaftans.
There isn't a river too deep... I'm swimming.

So, seems threads posts are lagging their ability to be available in the fediverse, past the normal 15 minutes. Could be just a temporary thing for @mosseri & @zuck to see if we care (we do), but clarifies that all of meta is unreliable now.
Come on now, we know meta is degrading, but I hate it.
Leave meta's platforms as much as you can since no matter what we do, they'll degrade further. Your connections & businesses cannot rely on meta any longer.

One thing people might want to keep in mind when others tell them that Mastodon is "too confusing" is that I am seeing literally _fleets_ of people trying to leave Facebook saying _BlueSky_ is too confusing for them, and being utterly unable to find other BlueSky users despite knowing the usernames of the people they're trying to find.
I do not understand this and I do not want to be judgmental, I am simply presenting this "holy shit" fact.
Giving a URL to a profile and saying "click on the Follow button" seems to be helpful, but I'm trying to find out if that works properly if a person's only real way of using the web is through phone apps.
