🚧 Ah, FreeBSD 15's new "bridging" act—brought to you by the same innovators who think deprecating features without a plan is a cool party trick. 🎩 VLAN support? Check. Confusing sysctls? Check. Of course, they graciously leave future headaches to sort out the whole router-on-a-stick mess. 🎉✨

This will be of interest to all of five people that words like "bookmarklet" and "bridging" mean anything to, but hey, if that's you, check this out.

If you are bridging your Fediverse account with fed.brid.gy/ to bluesky, you can also make a custom username for the bridged bluesky handle, if you have a domain.
This is my bridged Pixelfed account:

I still have to do this for my Mastodon account...

Naive question since I still haven't manage to secure enough time to wrap my head about how #BlueSky is working: is it possible to bridge with #BlackSky without sending data to Bluesky directly?

Maybe @anewsocial would know?

I'd imagine that such a post could then be shared and end up on Bluesky relays eventually but I just want to know if it's possible to have the data initially sent to a BlackSky relay only.

Updated Nov. 1, 2025 with Wordpress information.

The “fediverse” is the term for the federated social web, a collection of social media concepts (Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Friendica, Bookwyrm, etc.) that can all talk to each other by virtue of a common protocol: ActivityPub. The technical details don’t matter. What matters is that, in the fediverse, everyone can have a home without paying […]

"In other words, to mitigate the risks of “high conflict” while supporting “healthy” or “constructive” conflict. When we use the terms #bridging, or reducing division, we are thus not referring to “making everyone believe the same things.” Those terms are instead shorthand for enabling mutual understanding and respect across divides—in other words, supporting pluralism." 2/x

"Overcoming the “bias toward division”, #bridging is not about eliminating conflict or creating homogeneity. The goal is to check the default tendencies of many environments (including much of social media), which can potentially push us toward extremes when combined with our psychological predilections. [..] The intent is “conflict transformation”: not to remove divisions or interfere with the substance of civic debates, but to “make conflict better in some way.” 1/x

@troed @dalai well, #Bridging is not a valid solution for a plethera of reasons including the whole #API BS that said platforms do all the time...

@riley Also using visible light for FSOC avoids all the "spectrum compliance" and "licensing" issues whilst making it impossible to ban, unless one were to ban colour filters and lights!

Having access to said #specification for #IrDA is also beneficial for #RetroComputing as IrDA was a modestly successful tech and could thus be used for #bridging...
