Yaiy... looks like I might have found another bug which isn't in #pim6sd, but in the #Linux kernel instead... It seems like for a veth pair the recvmsg() call returns an #IPv6 sockaddr with a scope-id from the wrong side of a veth pair for #MLD v2 reports. Which pim6sd does not like, it will ignore the join then. MLDv1 reports work as expected though, there the scope id looks correct.

So I tried to document a potential pitfall with layer 3 #multicast routing, with #PIM in particular, here: wiki.dn42.dev/howto/pim-multic
The issue of multicast potentially being black holed if the unicast topology is larger than the potential multicast one. I'm wondering how other people tackle or avoid this or if I'm missing an easy solution.
(I'm wondering if maybe @troglobit or @dentangle might have some ideas?)

Thought... A network backup system where there are two ipv6 multicast channels. One, servers send on and clients receive on, and one clients send on and servers receive on... Basically servers send "backup everything since T starting now" and then clients who receive that start sending their incremental backups, which all the servers collect and archive.

Just noticed that the Wikipedia article regarding "#IPv6 address" says "::/0 -> Default *unicast*" here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6_add
Has anyone any source/RFC why it'd be unicast only? Mathmatically it'd be both #unicast and #multicast, wouldn't it?

That was actually a question I asked on the #IETF PIM mailing list in the past: mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/
Without getting a definitive answer.

After two weeks of off-and-on banging my head against this multicast routing lab, I finally found the problem. The default TTL for •all• multicast packets on Linux is… 1. #Multicast is not profiting authoritarianism in any way, so I would really not bet huawei is going to invest in it either. It needs multipolar worlds entities collaborating together, not competing for power. This could come if ppl awake from the current slopness (as a next history wave)

Würde irgendwann nochmal gerne einen kleinen Vortrag + Workshop zu #IPv6 #multicast routing zwischen #Freifunk communities und hackspaces (via #PIM und #dn42 und Freifunk IntercityVPN) machen, jetzt wo das in der Gluon Firmware und in @batadv soweit laufen sollte. Frage mich aber, was dafür der beste Rahmen wäre. Bei der @nook im November? Oder in kleiner Runde beim kommenden Chaos Communication Congress im Dezember? Oder online vor einem Gluon Meetup? Gäbe es überhaupt Interessierte?

I just wanted to make a little #multicast safety feature in the Linux bridge available to #switchdev + #DSA, too, to use it on #rtl83xx / #rtl93xx #Realtek drivers / switches later. One suggestion on the PR was like, maybe we could do the locking differently or use atomics. Me several hours later:

@vibechen eigentlich schon. Früher hatten wir uns immer viel bei den @ffhl treffen dazu ausgetauscht, aber da kommt leider schon lange niemand mehr, auch nicht durch's ändern auf quartalsweise. Den Austausch vermisse ich etwas.
War auch am überlegen, vll. mal einen #dn42 Vortrag mit anschließendem Workshop beim #Nobreakspace zu machen. Weil man mit dn42 ja auch eine Menge praxisnah lernen+experimentieren kann. Hatte da letztens dn42 wieder eingerichtet und wollte da mit #multicast weiter machen.

@Natanox @librecast @EU_Commission @dentangle on the other hand I think it would be great if public broadcasting institutes in the EU were deciding to move to #IPv6 #multicast in the long run, not DVB-T. Maybe even mixed with public, open IPv6 capable #MeshNetworks (similar to #Freifunk for instance). And tackling any technical issues along the way.
So that eventually we'd have a robust, decentral, bidirectional communication infrastructure at affordable costs. 2/2
