This is something much discussed in #NeuroTribes by @stevesilberman - an amazing book though that part is hard to read because of all the cruelty. I do believe this is very much the current plan, however. Sad parallels but people like them definitely will want to get rid of the people who are burdensome. Like me. Or maybe not. The thing is that so many do not see #neurodiversity for what I think it is, #evolution. Some angles will not work out but others will.

I remember reading a segment near the end of #Neurotribes that suggested that if #autism were indeed stamped out then humanity would cease to progress.

Having typed this I am wondering what #Neanderthal people may have thought at a similar juncture.

And then again, I could be full of crap here, just thinking in the open.

Past the halfpoint in Silberman's NeuroTribes. It's really interesting read, although painful in places due to what has been done to us. I just read a sentence mentioning that in Asperger's files, there were many engineer fathers. My father was a graduate engineer...

100% agreed. An outstanding book, #Neurotribes, mentions that if "autism" were eliminated it would likely mean the end of human scientific progress.

Spoiler alert: the eugenics movement in the US was taken up by the Nazis in the run up to WWII. Coincidence?

Finding out yesterday that @stevesilberman had passed away suddenly had more of an impact on me than I expected. I didn't know him but I kinda did I guess, because I read #Neurotribes in the early days of figuring things out about myself, as a lot of #ActuallyAutistic people seem to do, & it's an excellent resource & he wrote compassionately & without pre-judging. So I guess I knew that he was a person who saw more of people & the community than what's on the surface & that's a special ability.

So saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Silberman, a fierce advocate for #neurodivergent people, LGBTQ folk, and humanity in general. His book, #NeuroTribes was revolutionary in helping change the mental health community’s understanding of autism and other mental health challenges, redefining them as “a different way of thinking” as opposed to an “illness”.

He was with us here on mastodon just a few hours ago, and i will miss him SO much 😢

You know, one upshot of #Neurotribes was that somebody knew what Autism was and even best how to deal with it in the goddam 1930s but I still had to live my life where not a single person ever said the word, starting in the 1960s and I suppose people still do because the other sort doesn't want to know or talk about it still.

I think Neurotype has to parse all of sciences of human beings, but it also sort of destroys memes I was believing in, like the March of Science, the accumulation of human knowledge - it doesn't really matter, millennia of development, you can't think beyond your Neurotype. That knowledge isn't really accumulating, is it?
Scientific "discoveries," remain mysteries, never really permeating the world, you know my bugaboo, evolution, "discovered," and named two hundred years ago almost, and still all law is based in Platonic human "nature."

I was pondering the other day the theme of #Neurotribes, that with Autistics, it can take a long time to find ourselves and do anything (even if we are unabused), and thinking in particular, how do we learn language from people who don't use it?

I mean, you're supposed to learn what words mean when you're young and it's "spanking doesn't hurt," and "cats don't kill things," how the Hell do we EVER learn what words mean, and it occurs that it takes us extra time, but really, do they EVER learn it?
