Ah yes, when you're so used to making do with regional stock on your urban railway that when you finally get the opportunity to order a completely new fleet you… get more regional stock, complete with narrow aisles and steps between carriages. Despite already having higher platforms than on the mainline network.
Newag says this is the best they could do given the number of seats required. And that using classical bogies necessitated the steps, but "helps better adjust the floor to the platform level".
Myself, I'm not sure what I expected anymore. Enjoy the seats, I guess - they look like what we know from the Impuls 2s that already run here, those are pretty nice and comfortable (on reflection, isn't it crazy that in this country you often get nicer seats on regional trains than on InterCity these days?).
And maybe I shouldn't be throwing stones - it is a pretty long route.
