I fixed my printer! My old Samsung C460W printer recently started to smell really bad when printing, frequently had paper jams, and would occasionally take a ridiculously long time to print, until eventually it stopped. At one point I pulled 3 sheets of paper out, one of which was shredded, and most of them printed on both sides, despite this being a single-sided printer (I still don't understand how that's possible).
Of course I could just accept that it'd dead and buy a replacement, but why not try to fix it? Lots of stuff is much more fixable than people think, so I looked up some videos about how to open up this model, and then postponed this for a couple of weeks.
But last night I decided to at least open it up, so I could have a look at the insides today. Opening and disassembling it is not that hard. My theory was that either the fuser unit (the part that fuses the toner to the paper) was dirty or damaged. Replacing it would cost EUR 55, but maybe there's just some easily removable scraps of that shredded sheet on it.(Note: I had no idea what a fuser unit even was before I started on this. All of this is easily learnable.)
Turns out there was a sheet of paper wrapped around the fuser. That's not supposed to happen. But the fuser has a wheel that you can turn to slowly unwind the paper. Once removed, put everything back together, connect it, start it up, run a print, and it prints like new. Quickly, no smell, perfect quality. So now I know how to repair another thing.
Only black & white instead of colour, but I think that's a Linux issue and not my printer's fault.
