#nexdock360

2024-09-04

@ThePlant 5V/5A PD from the lapdock. Not bad! Still far away from the 45W the Steam Deck can gobble up - yet a move in the right direction!

That's better than #nexdock360 which maxes out at 5V1A: nexdock.com/support-nexdock-36

I use a #nexdock360 but it recently had an issue where it would boot and shut off on its own. Aftet contacting support they sent me a new PCBA board and battery so I could fix it. For a device as thin as an ultrabook, it was easy to replace the parts. Now its like new! Its momenta like this where I remember how the #RightToRepair is so important. I wish more mainstream companies supported that right.

Hello from my #Librem5 docked to my new #Nexdock360! I really feel like I'm living in the future here.

@Coffee @purism #Librem5 in docked mode (e.g. connected to #nexdock360) or @mntmn #reform.

I did many #Librem5 convergence demos with my #Nexdock360 at #scale19x. It's so fun to watch the moment when people *get* convergence after seeing me drag a known Linux desktop app between screens and have it morph based on screen size.

At the #minidebconf in Hamburg last month I deliberately didn't bring my laptop and did all my packaging and light coding on the #librem5 using a #nexdock360.

While it did indeed get a bit hot during compilation, I enjoyed using #phosh in docked mode very much 🚀

@trregeagle @kyle @purism

Maybe the part with using #nexdock360 and #librem5 as a tablet is a bit far fetched...

All the rest is working for me just as @kyle described it. I extended his solution with an external usb-c dock to have the #librem5 charge (no matter how full I connect it) when the combo N360/L5 sits on my desk at home connected to external power.

By doing so I even can switch off the N360 and keep the L5 charging and connected to my lan.

@gdr

Yes, the 5W is really very little and considering that a cheap usb-c dock can deliver a lot more I think it is a real design flaw in the #Nexdock360.

On the other hand: when running on battery maybe it is o.k. to limit the power output to have a better usetime in total. No use if the phone is full and the N360 empty.

But still, this could just change when external power is connected to the Nexdock.

Found my desktop #convergence setup for my #Librem5.

Problem had been that the L5 did discharge while connected to the #Nexdock360, because the N360 only delivers around 5W of power to the connected device.

This is fine if both devices are used on battery and discharge this way.

But I wanted to be able to use the L5 while charging.

Yeah, one point on my todo list for Librem5 using done 😃

The Librem5 is attached to the right side of the screen of the Nexdock360 using a magnetic holder.

It connects via a 90° usb-c adapter to a Baseus usb-c dock. The usb-c dock draws power from the original L5 power adaptor and delivers enough to charge the L5 while using it.

To the docks usb hub are an usb wireless mouse connected and the usb port of the N360 for keyboard and touchpad data. Touchscreen does not work this way.

The Baseus dock comes with an built-in ethernet adapter which works fine.

The Nexdock360 draws its power from its own usb-c power adaptor.

I had to test three 90° usb-c adapters to find one that doesn't lead to errors like recurring disconnections of hdmi or usb components.

The two adapters beside the mouse didn't work.

Looking for information and a way to improve the situation I found that the #nexdock360 can only deliver 5W 5V/1A nexdock.com/support-nexdock-36 which isn't enough to run the #Librem5 forums.puri.sm/t/librem5-does- . For comfortable headroom for charging I would need 3A. Using a usb-c dock with hdmi and usb-c (keyboard/touchpad) connection to the N360 seems to work and keeps at least the charging level of the Librem5.

Here are two pictures of the #Librem5 witht the "Matte" display foil installed.
It is obvious that the foil reduces the glare a lot when compared side by side with the bare display of the #nexdock360.

librem5 with "Matte" display protection foil.Librem5 on the right side of the Nexdock360 screen. A window mirroring in both screens. A lot less in the screen of the Librem5 with the "Matte" foil installed.

One thing that I really do not like on the #Nexdock360 is the slot for a micro sdcard. I love that it is there, but I can't use it without tools: to insert a card I need something to push it deep enough into the case to stick there and for removing it I need tools to push the card to the point at which it releases and then another to pull it out.

I guess the slot is designed with a card permanently being installed...

As far as I could find out my #nexdock360 does not deliver enough power to the #librem5 to keep it running and charge it at the same time.

The N360 delivers about 5V/1A which isn't enough - battery goes down by ~3%/hour when the L5 is idle, screen on.

On the road this doesn't matter, because both batteries discharge, but on the desk I'd love to see the L5 charging while I use it docket to the N360.

Would be worth buying a kind of power injector to the usb-c connection if that only existed...

#screenshot #shotonlibrem5 showing my desktop when the #librem5 is docked to the #nexdock360.

This way the phone is usable like any #notebook. Performance is fine for most tasks. Didn't try things like #gimp, #libreoffice or #freecad, yet.

Didn't have to `root` the phone to get a root prompt or to dock it this way. It's just part of its functionality. Instead of `rooting` as way to use my device freely as I want and control my data I can now just alter open source software, program, improve.

I tried the actual #postmarketos image on my #pinephone and convergence worked with the #nexdock360 the first time I connected the phone to the nexdock.

After disconnecting I could only once again get an image on the nexdock even though I tried some times.

I guess I should try with an older version to see if it is a regression...

Does anybody use the #pinephone with a #nexdock360 successfully and if so using which linux distribution?

Without any feedback I guess I'd try #postmarkedos first...

I tried 2 new usb-c 3.1 gen2 4k video cables and both worked with the #librem5 without any problems. I couldn't get a picture of the #pinephone #mobian desktop on the #nexdock360 though.

Both new cables seem to have a plug that fits more tightly into the usb-c connections of the phones and the nexdock and the connections does not break if I move the phone or the nexdock.

On the pinephone I'd like to try a different distribution. The problems started as I remember after an update.

Recently I started having problems using the #nexdock360 with the #librem5, also: the librem5 didn't show anything on the screen of the nexdock within a few connection tries and then worked as expected.

After I already dumped the usb-cable that came with the nexdock, because I didn't get a consistent result in connecting the librem5 or the pinephone I started suspecting the problem might still be the connection.

Could be the cable I'm using now, could be the connector on the nexdock.

@pima, thanks for the idea! I connected the switched off #pinephone to my #nexdock360. Switched on the nexdock, then switched on the phone. I had to enter my passphrase for the encrypted volume to boot which does on the pinephone only work using the on screen keyboard (on the librem5 I can use the nexdock keyboard).

After #mobian booted on the pinephone I unlocked the screen and found the convergence symbol in the top bar - but no output to the nexdocks screen.

Since the last updates the screen on the #pinephone switches back on when the #nexdock360 is disconnected. So there's change and progress.

But the last time I tried to get the screen of the nexdock working with the pinephone it didn't switch on at all. Keyboard and touchpad are working, convergence symbol is shown in mobian and I can move windows to the inactive screen of the nexdock.

Everything looks as if the mobian is using the second screen even though no picture is shown.
